Mitutoyo 178-561-02A Surftest SJ-210 Surface Roughness Tester

This tester comes with everything you need, just make sure you order the model with the stylus diameter you need. It is very nice to use and takes only a day or two to figure out. I also ordered some accessories like the feet and the bracket for height gauges. I wish it came with the SD card. Generic settings for most measurements are at the end of the manual. Built like what you'd expect from Mitutoyo, spend the extra few hundred and get this one instead of the cheaper no-name brands.

The unit is accurate and very easy to use. Unfortunately I thought this would have units in "in" but it only shows units in "mm". It is a little weird that it only has one option for units.

After searching the net for a good portable roughness tester, the SJ-210 was the best and relatively cheapest. I found best price on Amazon. It practically does all roughness measurements in a longitudinal direction (watch for the model number because there are many SJ-210 out there).I also ordered the DP-1VR Digimatic Mini SPC Processor, which only prints numbers and a statistics report, which is very brief. I wish I found the SJ-Printer 178-421A which I searched the entire net and didn't find any place that sells it. The printer gives detailed report with profile graphs. I had to download the Mitutoyo PC program to compensate for this issue, but printing on a dedicated printer is much more efficient and can be used as a report for the client.

I have been using this to test woven tarpaulin and found that it does the job very well. My single complaint is that as you work on your measurements you either need a custom-built stand, or some other way of safely securing the instrument.The natural way would be to make the bottom (where the AC adapter fits) totally flat, so that you could safely place the instrument on this side between each measurement. It would let you read the display, and it would get away from the material you want to move away. Instead I find myself placing the instrument with the display towards the table as it is the only stable side to place it on that won't make the stylus touch something. But then I cannot read the display.

I have used earlier models and they have been very helpful. I researched the models and after realizing the SJ 210 had all the features I wanted so I bought one on ebay. a bit cheaper but no test piece, no manual and it arrives DOA. They offered to fix but I returned it. Found a new one on Amazon for slightly more with Canadian warrantee, manual, test piece and quick delivery. I was able to finish my project and it is a great unit. Easy to use.

I have used a Mitutoyo roughness tester about 6 years ago at a previous job. I currently have a need for measuring surface roughness after grit blasting metals. After searching, and finding the best price on Amazon, I ordered this Mitutoyo SJ-210. It is an incredibly simple to use tester that is packed with functions. The color screen is crystal clear and shows a graph of the roughness measured. Anyone looking for a robust easy to use tester should definitely look into the Mitutoyo SJ-210, you will not be disappointed. Also, look into the adapter to mount the probe onto a height gauge, makes for even easier measurements.

Great tester, this replaced the phase II srg that we tried before and it very easily outperforms. It is easier to calibrate and use and can easily switch between units of measurement easily as well. The only downside is that unless you're measuring a flat piece that fits under the tester, you need to construct a stand for it to sit on.

It works perfect. Too bad the price was 300 dollars over the real price :(The product is the best and nothing else will replaced it!
