Robert Mapplethorpe: Polaroids

what do you think of when you hear his name? Yes S&M photos and the uproar that he caused from particular people questioning wether taxpayers' fund should support such smut or is this really art? Now that I think back, what these group people were really afraid of is that . . if we as a nation accept this as art we are all damned to hell, , , mmm maybe this is the impetus for the rise of the riligous right winger republicans that just about ruined this country as we speak, okay, I digrest, , back to the review. This is a nice photo book for a Mapplethorpe starter because although I have admired his work and know a little something about him, i never really owned a book by him. This is a nice start. It's small and handy and if the homoerotic pixs is not for you, you can glaze over those and admire the floral compositions. The portraitures of these seemingly mundane subjects ( linens, matresses, shoes, dressers) are made elegant by just him photographing it. I wish there was a little more of this to replace some of the peni shots and men couples, but its a minor complain. I recommend it nevertheless.

You can't go wrong with a Mapplethorpe on your shelf, this is my 3rd book on him and his collections are just so interesting to me. I tried to emulate him in undergrad with a few projects my professor handed to me. In hindsight, I think my professor got me into his work because she saw me struggle with my sexual identity AND she wanted me to get laid, finally.

classic, good price

Grab a copy of this book, especially if you're a photography buff. Unlike the cover may suggest, it's not just a book of dirty pictures. It's a wonderful collection of brilliant black and white Polaroid transfers. Each image is a genuine work of art and, unlike the cover, images show genius in composition.

This is a great book portraying an amazing history that is no longer used. I really miss having a polaroid camera.

Despite what some reviewers have said about how this book offers a lot more than photos of nude males, there are lots and lots of such images. How many does one want to see? For most viewers, not that many. I was hoping for a broader overview of Maplethorpe's work but, alas, this book doesn't provide it.

This is a gorgeous beautiful sexy book. Gorgeous! Highly recommend. Sigh... It's just beautiful.

A completely beautiful selection of Mapplethorpe's polaroid work from the early 70s and 80s. For fans of Patti Smith (and I would most definitely recommend fans of Mapplethorpe reading her book  Just Kids ) this includes a few shots from their many shoots together, it's great to see the work they did together in such brilliant print quality, as opposed to the low-res online versions. A brilliant addition to any photography / art book collection. Grab it while it's new and so well priced! Just Kids

Huge Mapplethorpe fan..

Je connais parfaitement le travail de Mapplethorpe, et particulièrement ces photos provocantes, ou son travail avec Patti Smith. On connaît moins ses travaux tels que "Flowers", très différents. C'est une erreur d'acheter ces "Polaroïd", qui, au premier coup d'œil, ne sont rien d'autre que ces brouillons de travail, pour, en effet, un livre tel que "The black book". Sans intérêt, donc.. Seulement une occasion de faire plus d'argent sur son œuvre. Retour, et frais de retour demandés, donc.

Las polaroids son el inicio de la carrera de Mapplethorpe, nos hablan de su cotidianidad y sus intereses, no de la calidad técnica.la introduccion es muy buena, pero junto con imágenes sugerentes ( la mayoría) se mezclan unas cuantas anodinas.
