Q: What am I missing? Is there any difference between this model and 31-001098? Wrong picture? Different steel?

Honestly, I think it's the same knife from different sellers. The picture looks the exact same. In any case, it's a pretty good knife, a little tight to open, but that's better than too loose. I don't think Gerber offers the same style knife in different steel qualities. I bought the one certified by Amazon just in case it was wrong and I had to return it. That's usually the safest bet. Good luck!

Q: Is the lock always putting pressure on the blade? My other remix doesn't move very freely without holding the lock open

There’s a small ball bearing in the radius of travel that engages when the blade is opened. Pushing on the lock does disengage it a bit but it’s not part if the lock itself

Q: Is the hole in the pivot of the knife large enough to get a finger through for a secure grip?

Absolutely, it's about a one inch hole and it feels really comfortable and secure with your pointer finger thru the hole and your thumb on the grooves on the top back side of the blade for none slip. Seriously, just buy it you won't be disappointed. It's my favorite type of knife now and since this one I've bought the serrated Gerber Remix and two other remix knifes from other company's in styles Gerber doesn't make, yet!!! Love the Remix!!!
