Having searched the Orient in search of a traditional mortar and pestle to grind small quantities of dry tea leaves into powder, THIS was the most expertly made set I found. Moreover, the bowl has over one hundred, uniform, and swirling peaks and troughs built into the bowl’s bottom so that DRY herbs and teas may be gradually cut into progressively smaller fragments with the least effort possible. The pestle, which is rounded on both ends (it is made of hardwood), is used with mild to moderate pressure.Another application for which this mortar bowl and pestle is eminently suitable is for the pulverisation of medication or vitamin tablets. The resulting powder, rapidly achieved, is easily tapped out of the mortar bowl by inverting it over a suitable container or vessel and lightly tapping the bowl’s underside with the pestle (akin to gently tapping a drum).Both mortar and pestle are VERY strong. However, no one will desire to mistreat a masterpiece of oriental ceramic and woodworking art such as this.
