An Interactive Journal
In this text, girls are encouraged to read a brief sketch of 35 women of faith and turn to their Bibles for the complete story. Each selection features a drawing of the Bible character, an activity page for illustrating the story, and three journal pages for self-expression about the story and what can be observed about courage for oneself. As this is another text in the "Courageous Girls" book line, it may be advantageous to acquire "The Bible For Courageous Girls." Its text is in the easy-reading New Life Version and would fit the ages of 8 yo and older. It would further encourage the understanding of the usage of the journal. The 175 pages of the journal provide an attractive and generous amount of space to grasp the context of each of these lady's stories.I chose to read and study Huldah who is presented on page 41. I used The Message version of the Bible with notes and reflections by Eugene Peterson. As I read Peterson's note above the passage in 2 Kings, I realized the High Priest dusted off the hidden or concealed book of Deuteronomy and the passage there was frightening. Huldah, a little known Bible character, stood her ground as a prophetess and spoke strongly and convincingly in regard to the 'Word of God.'The Courageous Girl of God book is well written and will be very strengthening for young women emerging into adulthood.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Fantastic Journal for Teens & Tweens!!
This is a fantastic interactive journal for teens and tweens which highlights women of the Bible. The journal begins with Abigail and provides the scripture that tells her story. Also provided is a page where you can draw a picture of something from her story, a page to tell why you feel Abigail was courageous, and a journaling page to tell how you can be courageous, too. There is also a page after each woman’s story with a scripture verse to read, reflect on, and write down your thoughts about how this could apply to you. The journal continues with women from the Old and New Testament, ending with the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment to be healed. How to Be a Courageous Girl of God is a perfect companion for Cards of Kindness for Courageous Girls!! Even though the book is geared toward young girls, I feel that women would enjoy it as well. It is a great tool for digging deeper into stories we have all heard from the Bible and exploring them in a whole new way.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

A Devotional for Tweens
Barbour Publishing has just released this new devotional for girls ages 8-12 called, How to Be a Courageous Girl of God: An Interactive Journal Inspired by Extraordinary Women of Faith. This devotional has 35 different examples that are given of courageous women who followed God. I liked that each character has the scripture for your child to look up on their own and read the section from their Bible. The brief descriptions of the characters are just that.. very brief. This devotional is more about getting your child to read and comprehend what the Bible is teaching on their own than someone telling them what to think about the passage. I like how they encourage different outlets of learning with including drawing along with journaling. The journaling section has plenty of room for your child to write their thoughts about what was read, and a writing prompt is given at that top of the page asking why that particular character was courageous. The following page encourages them to apply what the have learned to their own lives by how they too can be courageous like the character in their own lives. The last page of the section gives a scripture verse that sums up what was learned about the character and gives more journal space for your child to write about how this verse would apply.Overall, I think the idea is good in trying to help young girls to not only read the Bible stories but to ask the question, how can I apply the godly principles I see here in this character's life to my life? However, I would also encourage my child to not only look at the story of the person, but to first see what the passage is teaching them about God. This is the whole purpose of the Word of God. It reveals our God to us. I wish that would be more of the primary focus instead of the focus being on how to be like the people in the story. One other thing I didn't feel was a good choice, was that this devotional does include Noah's wife as a courageous example and makes assumptions about her since not much is said in scripture about her. I don't think such an obscure character should of been included. But, in conclusion, I think this devotional is on the right track in trying to get tween girls to think for themselves and to study Scripture. And would recommend it along with parental involvement!***I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under not obligation to post a review.
