Hot Dog (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1)

Excellent early reader!
I purchased these books for my 5-year-old daughter who is beginning to read and these Step Into Reading books are excellent as they have a high-interest factor that motivates her to read. The stories are also wonderfully illustrated in full color. The story here is of an adorable dachschund which is desperate to cool off but all his attempts to cool off fail. He encounters a pig, a skunk, and many other animals and people who aren't willing to help him cool off, or just don't care, until he comes upon a little girl in a pool. These Step 1 series are recommended for preschool-K - the stories are in large type and the vocabulary is easy. The stories are also in a rhyming format which makes them easy and fun to read, e.g. "Dog is hot, sheep are not. Shoo, shoo, Dog." The full color pictures also provide contextual clues as to the word being used in the text. These early readers have raised my daughter's confidence level in reading, and she is doing so well that I'm purchasing the Step Two books (Preschool-Grade 1). I use these books in conjunction with sight words to reinforce her recognition of common vocabulary.

Good book for beginner readers
My child is starting to put letters together into words and I was looking for a book with simple sentences, repeated words, and rhyming words to interchange a letter and get a new word. This book is good for that, and my child enjoys the story and pictures.

Great step.
Short and easy for reluctant readers. My six year old is a very reluctant reader. The I Can Read level 1 books are so long he gets very discouraged. He has been reading Bob books and is now very proud he can read a whole book. This is a wonderful baby step from Bob books if your child is not ready for I Can Read level 1. And the stories and art are cute enough to keep the child engaged and help with context for reading. Ive ordered more level 1 and numerous level 2 for when he is ready. He reads them to me at the table while I do chores.

great!
My four-year-old son soon will be learning his first site words in school. I got all excited and ordered him several books from Amazon. This book is PERFECT. I purchased others at the same "level" of reading (like the Nemo one, the Cars 2 one, etc), but they had little to no repetition, and they used complex words (like "caught") and long words (like "different") for a child just learning his first words. Hot Dog has short simple words along with repetition/rhyming and clues in the pictures so my son can read the whole book on his own. Not always exactly word-for-word, but close! I ask him to read it to me on the way to school, and he's so proud to be reading a story to me. This is a real confidence booster, even before his class officially begins learning site words! It goes something like this:Dog is hot.(next page)Mom is not.(next page)Shoo dog! (next page)Dog is hot.(next page)Cat is not.(next page)Shhhhh dog! (next page)

Great book for children who are just beginning to read
Great book for children who are just beginning to read. Words repeat themselves often so children are able to get the needed practice of recognizing a word. This is a favorite for both of the kids!

easy for little ones
This book is so easy for teaching little ones to read. The story is very easy for children to relate to. I have a three-year-old in my care and this is the third book by Molly Coxe that he has learned to read all by himself this year. The two other children in my care (both two-year-olds) are already copying this behavior even though they don't quite understand the concept of reading yet. I do encourage them though, and allow them to express their desire to read. So everyone gets a "turn ". I love teaching, especially little ones, and I'm sure I'll purchase many more books by Molly Coxe. Highly recommended.

Emerging Readers!!
I read this to my daughter twice and she was able to pick up the pattern quickly. It’s a great book for kids learning to read. “Dog is hot. Mom is not.” And then it repeats with different characters. I’ve given a copy to our PreK teacher as she looks for these kind of books for the class. Lots of clues in the pictures too!

Highly recommend this book for early literacy.
Excellent book for toddlers and beginning readers. Great illustrations and humour. I think I enjoy this book as much as my 2 year old son.
