Main gear and shaft that moves other gears and moves piston up and down. The gear can wear down and will not move the piston or timer. This gear will work with water softener AND filter valves. This is genuine Fleck part# 13170.Replacement Instructions1) First, remove "power head" from the valve body. Three screws (one in the Main Gear, center of Main Piston, and the TWO on either side of Main Piston ), slide forward slightly and then up.2) On the back of power head, remove Brine Cam Gear.3) On the front of power head, remove label on the center of the control knob to expose flat head screw underneath. HOLD THE MAIN GEAR in place ( don't let it "fall out" the back ) while you remove the screw in the center of the control knob on the front.4) Once the Screw is out, TURN the power head face DOWN, and slowly LIFT the Main Gear Shaft UP and Out. NOTE: Under the Main Gear you will find TWO small Ball Bearings sitting on TWO small springs. IF you have the New Main Gear Shaft in hand, now would be the best time to slide it into the power head. HOLD the new Main Gear from behind, and put the front knob ( and actuator gear or arm, 24 hour wheel, etc ) back in place ( everything only "fits" the correct way ). Screw the knob to the Main Gear.**ALIGNMENT**5) Only "trick" to doing this is the replacement of the Brine Cam Gear. The "hump" on the Brine Cam Gear must be aligned with the "gap" in the Main Gear. This alignment occurs 1/2 turn ( 180 degrees ) from the IN SERV position ( or the middle of the Brine Rinse Cycle ). * If you do it correctly, you will be able to turn the front knob and "run" the power head through ALL the cycles with out it getting STUCK in the middle of the Brine Rinse cycle.6 ) Put the Power Head back onto the Valve Body. Replace the Three screws. Remember to set the Time of Day on the Front

Replacement Works Well
I ordered this part by mistake but since its been thirty years since the part has been changed out I kept it anyway and made the change. Fits and works as advertised.

Perfect replacement for Fleck main gear.
Withouth this gear the softener is useless after replacing the gear, the softener is perfect. It was the solution i was looking for. My softener is 15 years old and running excellent thanks to replacment part suppliers like this.

I got the correct part the first time.
This is the correct part for the main gear on the Fleck 5000 water treatment system. It didn't come over night because it came through USPS. I installed it and now my system is back up and working properly.

My part came in a very reasonable timeframe. It is working fine, (on a water filter), thanks, David Thompson

Fixed our softener
The gear on our 8 year old Fleck started to strip due to the plunger getting stuck with deposits. This replacement is the same as the original and installed fine. Make sure you line up all 3 gears correctly during installation. It took me a couple of tries of installing, plugging in the power to let it run, then removing when I noticed the gears were misaligned.

Fleck 5600 Econominder Main Gear
Had to replace seals, spacers and piston do to malfunctioning valve. Since softener is almost 20 years old, I decided to replace main gear as it is in direct contact with upper part of piston and is a usual wear point. Old gear had a little wear where in contact with piston. Found online instructions on how to correctly replace main gear. Quick, easy replacement. Recommend looking for online instructions if you have not done this before.
