To the pragmatic critics, this is still a worthy book.
I’ve seen some of the reviews that bash this book as being “childish” but here’s WHY, and what to expect from this book. This book goes into detail on sugar addiction and an APPROACHABLE WAY to overcome it. Yes, the idea of creating an alter identity to overcome sugar seems childlike in some aspects, but the reason for that, is to take away the intimidation that people face when fighting this addiction, and, you don’t have to follow this book word for word to get good value from it. The author is giving you a psychological behavioral tool to overcome the problem, which is the point of the book. It’s also very personal / relatable, from the author’s perspective of struggling with it.If you want to go into the science of sugar’s impact on the body, why it’s so bad, and some diet rules, then check out “Sugar Crush” by Dr. Richard P. Jacoby and Raquel Baldelomar. This book is more about navigating the craving, addiction, behavioral aspect of sugar addiction, which is a different value in and of itself.Even if the idea of following the methodology for behavior change that this book explains doesn’t work well with you, you can tailor it to what works for you. Maybe you can’t control your environment as well as the author. It still doesn’t hurt to know that doing so can help. If you try to follow any book on behavior, word for word, without considering your individual life and situation, (without thinking about what will work for YOU), then you’re going to get frustrated, make mistakes, and ultimately stop trying because you’re trying to be perfect and exact. So while this book may not go into as much detail on the science of sugar addiction, it gives applicable, approachable, and relatable methodologies, advice, and experiences to help overcome and understand it. Which anyone can benefit from. This book is a perfect addition to overcoming a problem that you cannot be over prepared for.Note: I highlight in my books to help me retain important pieces of information, and so I can reference back to my books later.

Takes the Cake
I’ve been reading a lot of material regarding sugar lately, including Michael Collins book Last Resort Sugar Detox. It, too, was excellent. Between the two choices, though, for someone only looking to read one book, I would choose Sugar Demons. The author presents the most excellent set of tools and resources to assist you in your battle against sugar. Most of the tools and resources he mentions can be obtained free of charge. He ascribes full credit to SuperBetter author and game creator, Jane McGonigal. Mr. Cranford spends a good deal of time explaining this game. I downloaded the app immediately (it’s free), and it is life-changing. Starts with your creating a secret identity, and the adventure kickstarts from there. I love his writing style, and the way he simplified the problem of ingesting sugar – refined, in particular. His words speak to the readers without judgment and provide all the head knowledge one needs to take to heart. I just ordered his workbook and am greatly looking forward to receiving it! Having tried many, many diets over the course of my life and failing to adhere to a single one has been exhausting and so very taxing on my poor, fatigued, and tired body that has somehow – despite my own cancer run and numerous obstacles and challenges – kept me on my feet thus far. I appreciate all of my fantastic doctors – Joel Fuhrman, John McDougall, Neal Barnard (whose recipes I love), Jason Fung – for the solid, nutritionally-sound advice in their books. I have read more than one book from each of those fine doctors. Still, no one presented the information regarding sugar in a way that clicked and connected for me the way it did after I read Sugar Demons. Is this a good time for me to quit sugar? Started a new role in the company where I work fulltime. We’re in the midst of a global pandemic, and now, there is talk that I may need to either vaccinate or lose my job. I’m also the sole caregiver for my parents – mom has a broken leg and cannot walk or drive, and dad is battling a tumor. I’m 52 years old and 100 pounds overweight. My sister is getting married. I ask myself again, Is this really a good time for me to quit sugar? Strangely, I find the answer is YES! Part of me whispers, “Forget it…you’re too old, and it’s too late…” However, Mr. Cranford pointed out that voices like that are not my own. They are the notorious Sugar Demons, who are permanently hellbent on a search and destroy mission for my body that won’t end until I’m dead. Now, I know how to “Power Up” and silence those wretched voices, thanks to Jonathan’s book. Give it a try ~ you really have nothing to lose, except your arms and legs (literally!), as the author points out in his marvelous book. I found it impossible to stick to only “Green Light” carbs for 10 days. It lasted all of 1 day. But am resolved to refrain from the “Red Light” carbs! I need a little bit of fruit, and I wanted a wholesome, organic, nutritionally-dense soup. Was worried about the sugar content in tomatoes but gave up the worry and made a big pot that included freshly cut butternut squash, peas, small heirloom potatoes of mixed variety, mushrooms, celery, freshly shaved corn from cobs, onions, garlic. Bumped it all up to the next level in yum-ness by using Bonafide’s chicken bone broth as a base (that I only just recently discovered at Sprouts in their frozen section). The result? Even my carnivorous parents joined me in eating the soup for the next several days. I found it comforting, nourishing, and super delicious. My detox has not been impossibly difficult, which I found to be a mark of resilience by my embattled body. Mostly headaches and flu-like symptoms, but no cravings whatsoever. Maybe it’s just because I feel too sick right now to crave anything wicked. I did purchase the supplements but have yet to use them. I’m on Day 4 and only need to make it through today ~ taking it one today at a time. We’ll just see how it goes ~ Wishing you all the best!Update - Day 7: Was tempted to edit out the line about detox not being “impossibly difficult” and my body’s resilience but left it in to demonstrate the incredible depth of my naïveté. After I wrote that, my body crashed hard. So much mucous and congestion...began drinking dandelion tea and using the author’s recommended supplements on Day 5. Feeling a little better. Chest is not as congested today ~ detox is kicking my butt! Only need to focus on making it through today ~

This book was just what I needed!!! It was a quick read to get to the supplements & actions I needed to take because I was READY to conquer my sugar cravings! This book held my interest & was able to finish in 3 days. I related to the author’s journey SO much & that helped motivate me to take notes & get started! Best book I’ve read by far when it comes to understanding sugar cravings!

Love the Game Idea
Well written. It was extremly informative while entertaining. I absolutely love turning this into a game! It was fantastic to be able to relate to so many things and that it included a well rounded ways to hit this addiction from so many areas of one's life. Not just a diet! And that the author acknowledges that not everyone is the same but this is just what works for him and how he's learned for different mistakes. Lastly, that it gives me hope to know that this is a lifetime battle and that at times the game will be easier than other times. But it will not always be difficult!

A clear guide with practical resources to gamify the battle
Wow - what an amazing book - the author pulls no punches in telling us we have what is not a craving, a little something for stress, but a full on raging destruction that is almost impossible to battle - because of all the sweet stuff around us. Apart from unpacking the nasty things what sugar does to our mind and bodies, he also provides practical tools and cheatsheets to gamify the battle. Yes, you fight the Sugar Demons with the Broccoli Angels. Don't laugh, read this immensely wise and readable book that can change your life.

Enlightening
This book makes so much sense. No. It’s not all science and stats. But it is a journey of common sense and a good of how to help yourself…. If you want to. Brilliant book

Absolute load of rubbish.....
What a waste of money this book was. To give you an example of how poor the content is, he actually suggests creating a superhero name for yourself to battle your sugar addiction (and even gives you some examples). The book is very light on any scientific data. If you’re the type of person who needs your hand held and constantly hear childish platitudes then maybe you might fight it useful. On the other, if you’re an intelligent adult then don’t waste your time.
