The Art of Flutemaking
V**.
Excellent instruction for the novice.
The author gives straightforward instruction on several different types of flutes. Some are Native American style, and the author's manner of construction is similar to a Native approach to creating a flute. As the use of a flute in many Native cultures around North America is sacred, the act of creating an instrument holds multiple levels of prayers of gratitude. It is important to consider this, even if one is not a member of a tribe. It IS a very good book of instruction and I commend the author.

Excellent How-To Book
I used this book as a guide to make my first branch flute. A wealth of information is contained in this book. It is written to provide techniques for flute making with or without power tools. All measurements are in metric so make sure you have a metric ruler or converter.

I'm sure there are better books on the market
Not very clearly written, very conversational. Needs some dimensioned drawings rather than sketches. This is more of a "how I did it" book rather than a "how to" manual. I'm sure there are better books on the market.

Book should have been called “How to make a Primitive Flute out of a tree branch
The book should be tittle “How to make a primitive flute from a tree branch, with NO power tools. The book is not very well written. It contains many grammatical errors, with very poor sentence structure. Words spelled wrong, the use of wrong words as in: this, that, the, if, it..... Way to much chatter and at one point the author was calling wood slivers “wood shivers??? That one made me laugh. The book needs some proper drawings rather than pencil drawn hand sketches. This is a "how I did it" book not a "how to" manual. The book includes dimensions to make only three keys, sizes of Flutes, B4, D4 and F#. These are all in the Tenor range. There are NO dimensions to make a Flutes with a deeper voice in the third or second Octave range. The largest size flute has a bore of 1 inch this is the D4. None the less it was still a interesting read that taught the reader some music theory, which was good! The author did go through with great detail the process of collecting, drying and properly selecting tree branches to split into the material needed to make a Flute. So if it’s your thing to make a Flute out of a tree branch then this may be a good book for you. But if you are at all handy with woodworking and the use of power tools, then this book may be too basic for you.
