This is the Chess Geeks set to get (not vinyl board, not triple weight)
This is a great set, but even after growing up using vinyl boards, the silicone board (though smelly at first) is superior.I ordered two quad sets, one with a silicone board and the other vinyl. I was sure I'd prefer the vinyl board (old school, right?) but the silicone board is better because it lays flat and folds into a carrying box. The vinyl really only rolls up and gets dirty easier. Yes the silicone stinks for a bit, but quit whining and leave it outside for a few days if it really bugs you.I also ordered the Chess Geek triple weighted sets. The pieces are smaller and imho not as nice. The quad set pieces are a little large for the board but are easily graspable, more substantial, and you can make that "THUNK" when making that killer move. The triple weight pieces are small--possibly too small for the 2" squared board.Yes, the Queen on the quad weight set has very sharp points and we filed ours down as well as others have. The triple weight queens have more traditional un-pointy points.

Strong/durable, heavy, and well packaged
LOVE IT!!!!! Listen or read, whatever. When I got the package, it was shipped in one big brown box, inside another box so it wouldn't get as damage if it was (which it was not) Had stuff inside so it wouldn't get broke. I used it for a day, wonderful and heavy had many 1 minute games with it and never fell down (in 4 days already had about 20 games on it.) And heres the best part. They are incredibly strong and durable. I was hopping up stares in my school with the bags in my hand, landed pieces first on the ground, so strong of a fall it bled my nose when I hit the ground and the chess pieces survived the hard crash, cant really explain it but they took a hard hit to the floor and survived no scratches or anything. P.S. the queen's head it really sharp and may wanna file it down a bit and also in the package, they had cover over the head of the queen so they don't damage the other pieces. YES I WOULD BUY THIS AGAIN NEXT YEAR :D

Adequate
I read another review complaining about the queens crown being razor sharp. I thought he was exaggerating. He was not. They are like rose thorns! I just sanded them a bit to make them less sharp, but what was the designer thinking?I am also disappointed in the packaging. The pieces were wrapped in the board, and that in plastic. Must be extremely careful in cutting the plastic off, so as not to cut into the silicone.I went with the silicone because it is supposed to lie perfectly flat. It does not. Pretty good, but still some wrinkles around the edges. I suspect it has to do with the poor packaging. Maybe it will level out with time.I really enjoy the heavy weight.

The Best Chess Set I Have Owned!
This is the best chess set I have had. I am very glad I got it. The detailing of the pieces is quite remarkable, as is the size, and weight too. Hollow plastic pieces is what some of the sets I had when growing up, but this is just incredible! There were no damages to any of the pieces. The points on the queens crown are sharp. It is hard to take pictures that do justice for each piece. . .but they are very much as pictured. The silicone board, something which is new for me, is marked, which I also really appreciate. About the heaviest pieces are the Rooks. Every piece is very large, in comparison to the Pressman and other brands I recall using. . . I am very pleased with this set. I play it often. It is about five to six pounds. Again, the best set I have ever owned and would recommend it!!!

Nice pieces but wasn't impressed with the board
I love the heft of the quadruple weighted pieces. They are solid and have a nice feel. The kings are little larger than official tournament size, and with a tournament 34 piece set like this, if you buy a bag for it and are not careful, you are apt to be disappointed when the board and pieces do not fit the bag. The queens ship with a piece of cardboard and rubber band wrapped around the top, as the crowns are very pointy and delicate, which is also a bit disappointing, as I worry about the points on the crown getting chipped off. Some people have commented on the silicone board, and I must say I prefer the vinyl boards I used to play on. The silicone board is not thick, and has a rubbery flimsy feel which is quite likely to allow surface irregularities in the underlying table to make the playing surface uneven. It also has a tacky texture to which lint, hair, and dust tend to stick. The board will lay flat on a smooth solid surface.

Don't get the silicone board
The pieces are nice, although I'm told the weight doesn't feel quite right on them, so they are noticeably different during game play than other sets at the tournaments. Warning: The queens are very pointy! The silicone board, however, is awful. We're ordered it because the vinyl ones tend to get permanently creased, but the silicone board collects every random hair and crumb it can find. It got gross very quickly, and I noticed that players at the tournament were visibly repulsed. The board was new and had gathered all sorts of junk in just a little time at the tournament! It also has a weird, sort of creepy feel to it. I wish it had been made out of the same silicone used in my baking stuff.

Feels great Looks great
Yes, the sharp crown points on the Queens need to be blunted with an emory board or file. But I don't think they would have drawn any blood. My only complaint is the lack of continuous ink on the H8 square of the chessboard. Manufacturer was letting the printer get low on green ink at the corner. Not enough to subtract a rare fifth star. Pieces are perfect. It is not the silicone board that has an odor, it is the plastic wrapping trapping in air on a new piece of inked silicone. On the airy porch for a few hours, and it is fine.
