Emily Bronte The Complete Poems is a compact, portable edition of all Emily Bronte's known poetry. The book is divided into four sections: poems published in 1846, dated poems, undated poems, and poems of doubtful authorship. The first section contains the twenty-one poems Bronte chose to publish in 1846 in a joint venture with her sisters. The book reviewed well but sold poorly. The next section contains poems that are dated or for which a date could be conjectured. The third section contains poems which have no date or for which no date could be determined and the final section contains two poems that have at times been attributed to Emily Bronte and at times to one of her sisters The book is edited by Janet Gezari who provides an introduction detailing the history of the publication of Bronte's poems. Gezari also explains her approach concerning punctuation and capitalization, and the matter of authenticating Emily Bronte's work. The notes in the back of the book deal with dates of publication and comments by past editors as well as Gezari. As for the poems themselves, all three of the Bronte sister-Emily, Charlotte, and Anne-are associated with a literary style known as gothic. Gothic literature tends toward the gloomy the mysterious and sometimes the supernatural. One of Emily's well known poems is Remembrance, an elegy written in a AB rhyme scheme with a slow and deliberate rhythm. It begins with a harsh confrontation with loss. Cold in the earth-and the deep snow piled above thee, Far, far, removed, cold in the dreary grave! Have I forgot my only Love, to love thee, Severed at last by Times's all-severing wave? Now, when alone, do my thoughts no longer hover Over the mountains, on that northern shore, Resting their wings where heath and fern-leaves cover Thy noble hearts for ever, more? Cold in the earth-and fifteen wild Decembers, From those brown hills, have melted into spring: Faithful, indeed, is the spirit that remembers After such tears of change and suffering! Sweet Love of youth, forgive, if I forget thee, While the world's tide is bearing me along; Other desires and other hopes beset me, Hopes which obscure, but cannot do thee wrong! No later light has lightened up my heaven, No second morn has ever shone for me; All my life's bliss from thy dear life was given, All my life's bliss is in the grave with thee. But, when the days of golden dreams had perished, And even Despair was powerless to destroy; Then did I learn how existence could be cherished, Strengthened, and fed without the aid of joy. Then did I check the tears of useless passion- Weaned my young soul from yearning after thine; Sternly denied its burning wish to hasten Down to that tomb already more than mine. And, even yet, I dare not let it languish, Dare not indulge in memory's rapturous pain; Once drinking deep of that divinest anguish, How could I seek the empty world again? Remembrance deals with loss and the accompanying pain that comes with loss. The speaker struggles with the concern that she is forgetting her lost love, thereby doing him an injustice verses keeping her memory of him alive The speaker admits that, "No late light has lightened up my heaven, No second morn has ever shone for me;" yet she also says she has reached a place where, "existence could be cherished...without the aid of joy." There is a note of ambivalence to just what the speaker of the poem is hoping for as the poem contrasts a joyless existence with the "rapturous pain" and "divinest anguish" that her memories bring her. Emily Bronte never live long enough to see the success of her work. In 1848, barely a year after the publication of her novel, Wuthering Heights, she died of tuberculosis. Today her writing, along with that of her sisters, is considered part of English canon of great literature and although it is often somber and melancholy, it is also possessed of great beauty and passion.

The best edition of Emily Bronte's poetry
I loved this book! Emily Bronte is one of the greatest poets in the world literature and this edition has very informative commentary. Indispensable book for every Bronte fan and poetry lover.

Emily Bronte was England's Emily Dickenson.

Nice Read
Her eloquent writing style is enjoyable to read. However I have found the vast majority of her poetry to be very sorrowful & most of it to be on the subject of death. That can be good or bad depending on the reader.

Bought for a friend who was overjoyed
Contains a lot of poems my friend had never had the chance to read before. She is 82 and a big fan of the Brontes. It made her so happy and therefore was a really satisfying gift to give.

1 estrela só por causa do conteúdo do livro e porque não posso dar menos que isso. Porque a edição é horrorosa. Antiga. Está manchada. Oxidada. Fora que não é a edição que estão anunciando. Extremamente desapontada. Primeira vez que comprei pelo marketplace e não comprarei mais. Levaram mais de 3 semanas pra entregar um livro que estava dito como em estoque e o livro não é o que eu comprei. Não vou trocar porque depois de inúmeros contatos com o vendedor não tive um pronto atendimento. Mais dor de cabeça? Vou ler e enquanto isso importar uma edição descente desse livro.
