Inspiring story told by through the stories of children
I can’t find a good way to describe how I’m feeling right now after finishing this book. One word that does come to mind however, is “inspiring.” As a college student studying early childhood education, this book has made me realize something that I feel often goes unnoticed in the classroom. And that is that play is a child’s process of learning, understanding, coping, and loving. This book has inspired me to create a place for children to engage in play like the children in the book and be a teacher who understands the significance of every child’s story.

Letters from Mrs. Paley
Like many other Paley books, this book opens the world of small children to the reader and gives you much to think about whether you have your own toddlers or work in an early childhood setting. Unlike other Paley books, however, this text does not dig as deeply into analysis or reflection of a single group of students. It considers the similarities across multiple groups of students. It is a quick, yet reflective read!

Wonderful read!
An amazing book! I love how the examples were used from different schools. The only upsetting thing is that it ended! This book has changed the way I view play and friendships. I will definitely apply it to my future classroom!

Vivian Gussin Paley's The Boy on the Beach is a very, very well-written and thoughtful book.
Beautiful book and heart touching. I love the story about Stanley and his friends. I highly recommend it to all student teachers.

Another classic
Storytelling from the perspective of a "great child-at-heart". Ms. Paley gives us yet another way to understand how children think.

A valuable addition to the literature of childhood play importance
"In teaching, we learn what we do not know, but of a story we ask let me know what I know"- an examination of the importance childhood play and language which develops provokes thought on the topic, where too often today children are rushed through childhood. The narrative Paley reveals is one of the kindness children share with one another, the struggles they face and how they overcome. It reminds the reader too how valuable play is in a child's development. Excellent, as always.
