An ode to this penlight
As a busy Neurology resident, I am so glad I bought this pen light. It is not bright. It will not blind your patient. But it isn't dim either, your patients still grimace when you shine it in their eyes. The halogen bulb is different than basically every other pen light I've used, and casts a softer hue than the bluishly-white LED you're used to. The cone of light is also controllable, too, so you can be deliberate about when light hits the pupilIt's plenty bright for ICU or floor examsIt feels weighty and well made in the handIt's going to break one day. I've come to terms with that. So far it's survived 5 months of daily use without an issue. If I broke today I'd buy a new one (and be sad until it arrived)One wish: the green on/off cap switch is nice looking green. But which they'd made it Red so I could use to test color desaturation for eg optic neuritis - maybe in the next version Welch Allyn?A Haiku:Pen light, Rise and shineSluggish pupil constrictionEarly CN III

it is beautiful. The black is not a gloss
Having used a multitude of cheap penlights in my time, it was time to upgrade to an instrument worthy of my profession. It is incredible. It has a solid beam that is obnoxiously bright when assessing pupil reaction, but it works exactly as it should and typically I find the noxious stimuli to serve a dual purpose. As for the construction, it is beautiful. The black is not a gloss, but matte finish. The pocket clip is sturdy and will last even under quite a bit of abuse. The metal construction is very solid and has a heft that anyone who had held it knows it is of quality. In summation, I do not think I will ever have to worry about buying another penlight or this one ever failing me, but I will have have to watch it doesn't get stolen. A few neurology residents have already asked to "borrow" it.

Made Good
Penlight came with leaking batteries, they had been leaking for quite some time because the inside of the penlight was completely corroded. The contact which is on the base of the bulb was so bad it couldn’t be salvaged with cleaning or sandpaper, and the spring in the base which is the second contact had even worse corrosion. Penlight is absolutely unusable. Vendor did refund me for penlight, they did the right thing in the end.

Workhorse of a penlight
I am a neurologist and use it several times per hour every working day. I lost my other and had to purchase a new one. If it falls out of your pocket the lamp may break and has to be replaced otherwise my bulb has never expired.

Great pen light but it will BREAK on you. If you want a good service warranty, buy DIRECTLY from Welch Allyn.
I really like this penlight. After years of going through the cheap ones that don't light up anything, I took the plunge with a 50.00 penlight. I work in emergency medicine so need a good light source every day. I purchased this penlight in February 2017 and by end of April 2017, the bulb was gone. I called WA to ask for help and they informed me that Amazon is not an authorized WA product seller therefore they could not give me a 1y service warranty. Luckily the rep on the phone pulled some strings and got me a "one time" deal and they sent me a replacement bulb. I learned that the average life span for the halogen bulbs is 14 hours which doesn't seem "that bad" but considering I have had this thing for less than three months and the most expensive thing on it died quickly means A LOT to me. I don't want to have to replace the bulb four times per year..that seems excessive and expensive.I really do like it--its sturdy, heavy and provides excellent illumination. The bulb end gets very HOT if you leave it on for more than a minute or so and that is otherwise the only design flaw I have found (aside from the fact that the 22.00 bulb DIES quickly). I would love to keep using this product but if I have to replace the bulb every quarter, it may end up being the MOST expensive penlight in the history of the world.Buyer Beware on this one...the WA rep was nice on the phone so that's a plus. If you want to purchase this light, do it DIRECTLY through WA because then they can give you more of a solid service warranty so that when it stops working (and it will), you will have someone solid to turn to.In summary: a great source of light for someone on the go who has to chase kids around the ER and look in small orifices for toys, objects, etc BUT its kind of like a fancy sports car in that you'll be messing with the upkeep more that you probably want. Pick your poison, I guess?! Replace the crappy ones every few months for 5-10 bucks a piece or get the 50.00 one that's AWESOME but the replacement parts will empty your wallet.

The best there is
As a primary care doctor I have over the years been trying to find a replacement for this penlite that is cheaper and as good but without success. This penlite costs too much but it is the best one that I have used and to me it is the gold standard for the medical penlite.I only wish Welch Allyn was more helpful with repairing broken ones because I have three others that look normal but there must be a problem with the switch mechanism and it is cheaper to replace the whole unit than just the switch.I guess it fits into the cost of doing business.I wish I could find something comparable for less than $45 or so but I do use this penlite effectively all day at least 5 days a week
