Tuning Ease, Convenience and Sound
Aware that each violin is unique in its construction and sound and what works for your hearing and instrument may not work for me. Having said that, for the price and ease of installment my decision to change out my ebony tailpiece with one fine tuner for this Wittner with four fine tuners resulted in a better return than I had hoped for.My goal was to speed up the tuning process before and during playing. I have a great sounding violin, my only worry was that I might sacrifice great tone for tuning ease. Instead I obtained tuning ease and significantly better tone, more open, more resonant. Prettier. And to think that I was considering installing mechanical pegs.

I didn't know what to expect
We were given an old violin by a family friend. My daughter has a nicer violin, but I want her to have a less expensive one to take to school, camps, etc... After taking the donated instrument to a luthier, I was told it is a intermediate-level violin and needed a couple hundred dollars to get it in playable condition. Instead, I decided to restore it myself because I am fascinated by the complexity of the work that goes into an instrument. After some minor woodwork to repair unglued seams (do a lot of research before you attempt, it's all really cool!), I am now upgrading the fittings. Wittner parts are highly regarded, so I am using them when I can. This tailpiece allowed me to add fine tuners and adjust the after-length of the strings. The tailgut is easy to adjust, so I was able to start with 55mm of after-length and make incremental adjustments until I found the best length for the instrument. My luthier recommended the built-in style of fine tuner because it is stable, light and does not impact the sound.

These are fine.
Used to be cheaper. My opinion is this dulls the sound slightly compared to the old Wittner aluminum version, but they have priced the metal one to the moon lately, so I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

My peg tuners are not very good, so having 4 fine tuners is a must
Big improvement in daily use for my violin. My peg tuners are not very good, so having 4 fine tuners is a must. Maybe not for the purist, but I am not that. Also, this led me to look up the proper length from nut to bridge, my violin was not set up properly and that distance was way too short making it nearly impossible to get my big hands in proper position. This would be a good time to check that while you are replacing things.

Works great
The thread on the fine tuner of my E string stripped. I could have found an acceptable replacement for just the tuner, but I chose to replace the whole tailpiece. This one fits great and does what it is supposed to do. The fine tuners are easily adjustable. I can turn them with one finger when I'm quickly tuning during a song. The gut doesn't stretch much either. I play mostly outdoor shows so the composite was desirable. I've played over 20 shows in both warm and cold weather since changing the tailpiece and I have no complaints.

I wasn't sure about the material, but I'm convinced.
I was surprised how much I liked this tailpiece. The fine tuners are 👌
