Remarkable reference book
I have been buying, selling, and appraising antique guns for many years and have a decent library of specialty books. For US Springfield rifles, I've primarily used Ball's history of the Armory but recently came across a trapdoor with some inconsistensies and wanted to confirm it was simply a gun with a few replacement parts. Great reviews made me decide to buy Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch's book. I could not be happier. It's a really remarkable study on the trapdoor (in it's 45-70, 1873 and up configuration). Every detail is covered clearly and concisely. Illustrations are extensive and pretty good quality for a small paperback book. I was easily able to identify this particular rifle and write a detailed summary for the owner. This is a must-have for any gun shop that deals with antique guns, collector, or even aficionado of the trapdoor springfield. If I were to give any criticism, I'd say that the format is fairly small (but price is great), and thusly some pictures are a bit harder to see well. Perhaps a "special edition" in hardcover with glossy photos would be nice to put out. The editing I have is the newest with chapters on the officers rifle, fencing and experimental models. Perhaps next time the book is issued, a chapter on conversions would be a nice addition.

Perfect book to learn & rebuild this iconic rifle!
A complete book that assists the reader in Aquisition, repair, and rebuilding this wonderful rifle that developed after the US Civil war and was used into the Indian wars and Spanish-American war. Helped me restore one for a friend, and make my own version, converted to Colt.45! Great book!

Outstanding!
This is the only book you'll need for identification of every nuance of every model change of the 1873 45-70 rifles, cadet rifles, carbines. I figured it would be a rudimentary basic guide and bought it expecting such. This is THE BOOK. Buy it, it's inexpensive too. Hat's off to Poyer!

The .45-70 Springfield
I was looking for a reference book for my .45-70 Springfield to authenticate the rifle that was gifted to me. After some research of collectors it was suggested that the North Cape Publication, The .45-70 Springfield was the best book out there. One collector, and seller of the Springfield "Trapdoor" rifles includes this book with every sale of a rifle. This is by far an excellent book to period any part of the rifle. From pictures of the different screw types to differences in marking sizes to the thousandths of an inch that indicate the year of a part it's there.I work with these type of books all the time, and have others from the same publishing Co. and all are a must have. Wild Boar out.

Knowledge !!!!
Very informative book for the beginner not knowing much about the 1873 springfield precise measurements on the model parts so you can use a micrometer to see what year the part was manufactured! Thank You !!

So far I've been very satisfied with this book and I'll enjoy it more when ...
I bought this book because I wanted to research the history of a rifle that has been in my family for over sixty years. I've only had time to browse through it so far but it looks very promising. The book seems to be very thorough with it's parts descriptions and photos, and I'm very familiar with the work of one of the authors, Craig Riesch, from other books he's written on military firearms. So far I've been very satisfied with this book and I'll enjoy it more when I'm able to put it to it's proper use.
