A detailed analysis
The book is excellently researched and the documentation at the back is priceless. Without a doubt the examination the author made is comprehensive. It is well worth reading and certainly not an hagiography of culture under the nazis. On the other hand it avoids the temptation to spin all cultural expressions into a proof of evil or nazi control.Where the author eloquently outlines in particular Goebbels' role on cultural life he fails in consistently reporting on this. Instead it's spread through the book interspersed with anecdotal elements of favoured artists or series of summaries of plots. There is also an unexpected deviation into culture in wartime allied territory which really distracts from the subject. The author clearly saw the whole field but would have done well to take a step back and make a synthesis. It is there if you want to see it but particularly towards the end you feel the work is rushed. Nevertheless enjoyed it and can recommend.

socialist not conservative
only 1 big problem, in the book he said hitler was a conservative, he was a socialist. National Socialist workers party.
