They work, but you to prepare the ends correctly
These mechanical splice connectors are great, they work well. My dog chewed my incoming cable and it was a week before an engineer could be sent out. I purchased a cheap tool set with fiber cutters and cleaver here on Amazon. I also ordered some wipes and isopropyl 99.99%.As a DIYer, my fiber optic knowledge was limited to YouTube videos. I tried in earnest to prepare each end of the broken fibers. Unfortunately on my first attempt, when pushing in the prapred ends to the mechanical splice connector they wouldn't go in. Thankfully a close friend of mine (who lives over the other end of the country) reviewed photos of my prepared ends and informed me that I hadn't stripped the fiber completely. Apparently there was one more very fine glass layer to strip, he was right, this allowed me, once i had cleaned and cleaved the ends properly (14mm), to slide the prepared ends into the connector. I plugged in the power meter (that came with the tool kit) into the SC/APC connector, set it to 1550nm and had a db reading of 38.44. This is no good, it wants to read between 20-24db. After wiggling and adjusting the connector slightly the reading dropped to 24db. Hey presto. These mechanical splice connectors work a treat and have been a real life saver.
