Excellent new design based on user feedback
UPDATED REVIEW: Tyler and the folks at RentACoop have updated the feeder based on user feedback, including my own. The new feeder has more space for feeding tubes since it is now rectangular rather than square, they now recommend this feeder only for hens over 12 weeks (smaller hens might have trouble reaching the food), the top is much easier to remove yet remains waterproof, and the spouts are now attached with rivets rather than sharp screws. All in all, excellent upgrades and easily wins 5 stars for design and ease of use. We know we can go away for a few days, and the chickens will be fed. This is still one of the only feeders that doesn't allow chickens to poop in their food, or scratch it all out of the feeder looking for preferred feed. We have hung our feeder, using the handle strap, to the ladder into the coop which raises it up off the ground, and moves it enough to keep the food sifting down under the feeder tubes. Works as described, and our chickens learned fairly quickly to eat from it with the tips included with the feeder. The system keeps water out, and does appear to cut down significantly on food spillage, one of the most common rodent attractors. Since I had given feedback to Tyler about the design, he sent me this new version to try to see if the improvements addressed my concerns. They do, and I have upgraded the product from 4 stars to 5 to reflect this.

Food is staying dry!!
I bought these because I originally had a metal feeder that was open on the top and while I lived in the desert it worked fine. When I relocated to the east where it rains frequently, I had to make sure that the feeder was covered at all times to prevent the ran from wetting the food. The open ring around the old metal feeder collected splash up from rainstorms and ruined the food. THe metal also just did not do well in such a moist environment and parts started rusting and finally broke (of course it happed just after it was filled and spilled all over wet grass) I ordered 2 of these and they have worked so well for my area where we get frequent rains. Assembly was simple! Once my girls learned that there was food inside (which didn’t take long, when I used some dried meal worms for training and placing as instructed just inside and a few further in where the food was) they went to town! The food stays DRY. No rain or splash up getting the food wet. Very well made! They’re’ light, sturdy and easy to carry even when full of food. I love them and highly recommend!

Feeder works well and is easy to fill.
I purchased the feeder and Waterer for my 5 hens. My hens are in a nice size coop 24/7 due to all the predators I have here in the country. Both work extremely well and stay free of droppings. Also there is very little waste which is a great money saver. I do have one problem, because I use pine shavings on the floor of the coop, I have constant pine shavings in the feeder opening. I have to clear the shavings twice a day. I have raised the feeder up on cement blocks but I have one bantam hen so I have to be careful not to get the feeder too high for her. I try to keep the shavings at a minimum but they do help keep the floor clean and reduce odor. Also dust cakes around the water spouts so I clean those daily with a spray water bottle. I would highly recommend both. I live in Texas and it’s very hot. I no longer worry about the chickens running out of water.

I like this product
UPDATE ON NEW IMPROVED PRODUCT -- This chicken feeder is fantastic! The new improved model has changes in the shape of the bucket (it's more rectangular now), the lid, and the handle. I've had the feeder outside since the original review listed below. There have not been any functional, cosmetic, or structural changes in spite of the heat, rain, or snow, it has been through.First the positives -- The rectangular design fits the interior equipment easier while continuing to hold a lot of feed, over a weeks worth for my 5 hens. I really appreciate not having to fill their food so often and the mice have not gotten into it from what I can tell. The lid is easier to lift than the previous model. It can be lifted by hand, without tools. The chickens were easy to train in using it. All I had to do was make sure they could see their food through the feeding window once or twice. The handle is now plastic and feels/looks stronger and seems attached better than the metal one. It continues to keep the feed inside dry when outdoors, even in rain or snow. And it comes with AWESOME customer service! The slight negatives (in my opinion) -- The lid is definitely easier to lift but my daughter and I have loss part of a nail each doing so. Not a big deal unless you have an expensive manicure. I suggest wearing gloves. While the handle seems better attached, the divot/recessed area in the middle of the handle isn't deep making it difficult to hang the bucket level. In fact, after stretching the handle a little by letting it hang cockeyed, I gave up and have placed it on the ground. I'm not sure whether the mice will find it now or not.Overall, this is a fantastic product and I will definitely recommend and order it again!!! My chickens like using it and I love not having to feed them every couple of days! If you also have chickens, don't waste time with frequent feedings to the mice. Buy this product!Note: I bought the original feeder, which split after about 6 weeks outside, though still worked and kept my feed dry while outside. I wrote the review below on that product, which was read by the seller. They offered me the chance to receive the new improved version for free, in exchange for an honest review. As I believe in this product & have really enjoyed using it, I quickly agreed.I like this product. Had no idea that the mice under the chicken coop were eating us out of house and home until we bought this product. It only took the chickens 2 days to start eating from it and has saved us major dollars in chicken feed. We were able to leave it outside without moisture getting to the grain. Great product! However, I just went to fill it and found cracks around the feeding holes. In spite of rain yesterday, the food is still dry. I wonder if it wouldn't crack if the holes were closer to center. Anyway, I'm really disappointed as it's made a big difference for us. I purchased mid-June and it's the beginning of August.

Rat and Chicken feeder
The feeder does not keep out rats. It's good for keeping the feed dry. The chickens seem to get their food. The rats also love the feeder.
