Anyone above 14 years old can be using Autodesk Inventor 2014 productively in a few days.
I bought this book to help in teaching my 18-year-old son (who is Russian) how to use Inventor. I'd bought two Dell M6700 workstations for us, but due to mine being bad out of the box, he was the only one with a computer who was able to use Inventor 2014 so far. I have not used the new version yet myself, so I could only assist, but I wasn't really needed that much. Despite the language difference, he was able to understand the book and the software almost completely on his own. We have a 3D printer, and he is now able to design and print objects with no assistance from me.I believe this is the best way to learn, and you add skill as you practice. I was amazed at my son's progress, and can only attribute this to the effectiveness of the book's method. The only criticism I can make is that the illustrations, due to being black and white reproductions of screenshots, are not clear at all. Many times it was not clear what the shape was of the object being described, and difficult to determine where the dimension lines were pointing.All-in-all, amazing results for the money! If it were me, I would make it into a CD, where the screenshots could actually be screenshots. Maybe include a CD with the book - it would easily be worth $10 more. 5 stars AND two thumbs up!

Good book for a beginner.
This book is good for someone like me who needs the pictures with the arrow for each step saying "Left click here", "Right click here", etc. I had used Inventor 10 years ago for a short while and needed to start over and learn it again. The reason I gave this a 4 star ranking instead of 5 was that I wished it had more chapters. It covered enough basics that I can probably go on by myself but I would have liked a chapter on sheet metal. Also I can see a number of commands that were not covered but I think they are just variations that can be picked up when you need them and go looking. For example the book covered splitting a model but not combining. However I can probably figure out the combining command when it is needed. It appears that this book was written based on the 2014 Beta version or something similar since some of the descriptions and pictures did not exactly match the production 2014 release. However I was able to puzzle through the differences and figure out where I was supposed to be clicking.
