A great reel that will likely last a lifetime, if cared for.
I bought this reel for my grandson. He and I go fishing 3 or 4 days per week, and he has gotten to the point where he needs professional style equipment. This reel is great value. He wanted a Mitchell reel like I have, so I got him one. I have owned my current Mitchell 300 reel for more than 15 years and it runs like a champ. I still have my old Mitchell 301 reel as well, and it has served me for more than 50 years. I take care of my fishing equipment, and the Mitchell reel is strong. They are smooth, have plenty of line capacity, and won't let you down.

Best bang for your buck
I have the all size Mitchell reels. I have been using them for over 10 years. I rinse, grease and oil at the end of every season and haven’t had an issue. I have these on all of my son’s rods as well and don’t have any issues. These reels are bulletproof. I can’t believe anyone doesn’t give them 5 stars. There is no better reel for the money!!

It's a mitchell
I didnt think the 300 or 300a could get better but it did. Very pleased. The added a skirting to preven tangling under the bail. Best mitchel reel yet.

Seems like a well made reel for a good price
I have always liked these, ever since my father bought one on sale for $13 when I was a lot younger. That was one of the original French made 308's and I used it for almost 50 years in freshwater. Biggest fish it took was a 22 inch silver salmon, on 2 lb test. But it was getting a little long in the tooth. This one seems well made and it is very smooth and I am satisfied with the purchase.HOWEVER, Amazon, your delivery services are going downhill fast. I left the office last night at 5:30 to find eight packages piled up in front of the closed office door. Anybody walking out of the public lobby could have walked off with the pile. And I check on line and see the LIE that this package was personally handed to "a resident." Pure dumb luck any of them were still there.

Tasteful classic looking reel
To start this, This is not the old Mitchell 300, it resembles it only in appearance. The old model really wouldn’t sell to the newest generation of fisherman. It is a Chinese made reel that is contract produced in one of the dozen or so Chinese factories in China that produce probably 90% of the rod blanks, rods. Reels etc for the sport’s fishing industry. That’s the way it is today. That said it has a lot faster retrieval rate. Instant anti reverse. Lots of bearings etc. very smooth. For $40 price tag. Expect it to be as good as Kast King and other numerous reels in this price range. Quality and features jump in these reels as prices jump to the $60. $80 dollar ranges. A manufacturer like Abu Garcia I’m sure has quality standards and good support. They included a parts schematic and a couple of the nylon bushings that wear from use of the drag. I actually took this reel apart inspected lubricants and gears. Everything looks like quality. The anti reverse switch looks solid. The bail does have a plastic ( nylon ) part that may concern some. For most this reel will last. It has a nice balance. In this price range you get what you pay for. Worth $60!? No. $40 yes. You want more- pay for it. As always shop wisely. I am a casual few times A year fisherman. I paired with an old Cabelas fish eagle rod that was unused for many years. Perfect match for a 300 size reel like this Mitchell- it’s a true 300 in the traditional sense weight/size. Main reason I bought it. No fuss over the confusing labeling that is used today.

Great Reel for the money!
This is a great reel. I've had an old model of the Mitchell 300 for over 30 years. Great reel, but its time has passed. This new version is lighter, smoother and quieter. Although I don't use it often, anti-reverse is instant and silent. The reel still has a lever to disable anti-reverse. Apparently Shimano is moving away from this and making anti-reverse permanent. Unacceptable, many old-timers like being able to turn anti-reverse on or off. The reel winds the line nicer than the original 300 and the skirted spool keeps from the line from getting behind the spool like the old model. Yes, the body is plastic, but it is lighter. It is a tough modern plastic and nothing to worry about. I wish it came with two spools, but for the price you can't beat it. I bought three of these reels. I called Mitchell and got some extra spools at a reasonable price. In my opinion, this is a good reel for a 5 to 6.5 foot pole. I use it with 10, 15, and 20lbs test braided line. If you are new to fishing, you could put this reel on a $40 Ugly Stick rod and be completely happy with it until you turn pro. No need to spend a fortune to get a great rod and reel.
