Great purchase, for the price
Let me start off this review by reflecting on what my mother use to tell me, “you will usually get what you pay for”. First, I always read the poor reviews and then go back and read the good reviews. This help me to give weight to the poor reviews as to their accuracy. For all those complaining that the chain is plastic, I must say this, this is a $70 system and not a $600 or $1,000 high end commercial system. Really, what did you expect.Once mounted to my studios wall, my system is holding 3 107” x 24’ rolls of paper and 1 107” x 24’ vinyl roll. Consideration for what you are mounting, and its weight is vital to your mounting options.First let’s start with the mounting. Unless you have concrete walls, or you are going to mount this to a concrete floor, through away the mounting hardware. The hardware included with the kit is only meant to be used with solid concrete. The mounting brackets are drilled for all sorts of mounting options which I consider to be a big plus. Mounting to just sheetrock was not an option. I don’t care how many sheetrock screws you put in, sheetrock is not very strong and will weaken over time. After measuring I found that my studs were just a little to far apart. After consideration of putting up cross studs between two studs I discovered that if I only used the 4-outside hole on the brackets (they have 4 holes along each side and 2 holes in the middle of the bracket) and set the roller inserts to their max, the spacing was suitable for mounting the brackets directly to the studs. Using 3 ½” wood bolts (3” into the stud, drill piolet holes) I believe that my brackets will hold a couple of hundred pounds each. I did drill out the bracket holes just a little to accommodate a little larger bolt. Sense after I spent days coming up with this solution, I discovered that if you transfer your paper, vinyl to a piece of 2” PVC, you can cut the PVC to any length you want. This would allow you to mount to the studs where ever they are. I discovered this because I had to transfer the vinyl to PVC. Not because of its length but, because its center core was not big enough to accept the roller inserts. Now let’s get to using the system. The plastic chain is functional if you remember that it is plastic and not steal. You can’t go pulling on it like you’re lifting a garage door or speed rolling. I found that I don’t have to use the roller restrictor/locks for the paper rolls. This makes it much easier (less tension on the chain) to roll up the paper rolls. The vinyl is a whole different story as it is much heavier. First off, it’s to heavy for the plastic chains, they will break. You must tighten down the restrictor/lock so tight to keep the weight of the vinyl from unrolling the whole roll you can’t roll it back up. After trying it I ordered the backdrop holder for 42lbs with metal chain. Yes, it’s almost as much as the whole mounting set but, if your going to use 107” vinyl your going to need it. I also put a screw hook into the stud where the chain is. I unroll the vinyl and put the chain on the hook to hold the roll. This allows me to not have to tighten the restrictor/lock down which makes it easier to roll the vinyl back up. If you use a smaller (much smaller) roll you may not need to purchase the heavier holder. Try it with what comes with the kit and if you find it’s not suitable, order the heavier holder. If you’re going to use all vinyl, purchase a different system, this one is not heavy enough. All in all, considering the price and despite some of the issue, I am very satisfied and happy to give this product a 5-star rating.
