- Sprout Defender is the brainchild of two Lehigh Valley PA gardeners - they knew there was a better way to give seeds, sprouts, and seedlings a better chance against animals, bugs, and the elements. The unique perforated polypropylene material will last for years and offers substantial defense against : rodents, birds, insects, too much sun/wind, additionally the tiny holes serve as an ideal hold for climbing plants.

- Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I leave the defender in place the whole season, or do i need to remove it once the seedlings flourish? A: Depends on the plant, for peas - no harm in leaving them, for zucchini, leaving them is not an option or required past a few weeks. Q: How long will Sprout Defender last? A: Unknown, but the material is used in heavy industrial applications, so we are estimating a decade or more, especially if you store it indoors or a garage during the winter Q: Why is Sprout Defender better than using milk jugs? A: Milk jug caps degrade, don't allow adequate ventilation, decrease sunlight exposure, have to be removed after a few weeks, blow away, and require timely modification. With that said, modified milk jugs do offer better freeze protection for early planting applications in colder climates. you may want to start off with a modified staked milk jug, then transition into a Sprout Defender after a few weeks. Q: How many holes are there per square inch A: About 35 and they are 2 mm in diameter. Q: Will birds be deterred by Sprout Defender? A: It has been our experience that birds do not like flying down into confined spaces, and thus avoid the Defended sprouts. With that said, the most clever birds if they are hungry enough, will eat your seeds/sprouts - but our survival rate is exponentially higher with the Defender.
Sprout Defender virtually eliminates all but the most cunning of animals from eating your seeds and shoots. Larger insects also have a road block to get to your new crop. Simultaneously the tiny perforations in our proprietary material promote air circulation, but keep sprinklers and high winds from damaging fragile seedlings. Finally, the small vent holes make it easy for climbing plants to allow tendrils to get a good grip.
Conventional seed protectors have to be removed, as they don't allow the sunlight to shine through. (Traditional methods are to cover seeds/seedlings with a pot at night - which must be removed daily and could blow away)
The supplied 24" long bamboo rods ensure that Sprout Defender is anchored securely to the ground. Multiple sheets can be joined to create an elongated protection zone. As a bonus, the sheets are FDA compliant.

Instructions:
Each Sprout Defender sheet is pre-slit in 12 places to allow insertion of 3 stakes. (One stake must be threaded through holes at both ends to complete the circle). This allows for three bamboo stakes to securely hold the sheet to the ground.
First thread a bamboo stake through both of the inner columns of horizontal slits first. The third bamboo stake must be threaded through the slits on both ends of Sprout Defender simultaneously. The (3) stakes will keep the cylinder shape rigid. To ensure sturdiness, make sure that you insert the stakes into the ground roughly 4 inches. You may need to temporarily remove mulch around the base in order to allow the stakes make good contact with the ground.
One unit protects an area of roughly 7 ½ - 8" in diameter. Ganging the units together will increase protected area, but keep in mind that animals will be more likely to poach your seeds/sprouts if the area is less confining.
