5 year old product shipped
Just received the Nest Protects in January 2022, and after unpacking, discovered that they were produced in 2017, and have an expiry date of February 2027. This means that I paid full price for an item that is halfway its useable lifetime. After the expiry date, the Nest Protect is not usable anymore.Customers should be made clear of this BEFORE they buy. I purchased Nest Protects before, and they were all produced within a couple of months before they were received, so allowing me to have the full life of them.I returned the items as I am not prepared to pay a full price for half the product lifetime.

Avoid Nest Protect (2nd gen) - save your money, time and peace of mind
READ the 1-Star reviews --- these are more reliable than the 4 or 5 Star reviews.Purchased the 3 pack of 2nd Gen NEST Protect units in June 2017. Using NEST's instructions, all units setup flawlessly -- attached to my 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi and connected to the internet. Using iPhone app, was able to see my NEST Thermostat and 3 NEST Protects.Units worked fine until early-2019 -- when all Protect units (plus my NEST Thermostat!) continually disconnected from 2.4Ghz WiFi and did not reconnect. Protect units refused to reconnect to Wi-Fi -- and I had to Factory Reset 10x times... to finally get a re-connection. But, units then disconnected after less than 24 hours. Followed all NEST instructions on web site --- but units continued to fail. After 15+ hours of troubleshooting and tech support -- I finally gave up on the Protect units.Protect units that depend on firmware and software updates... creates too many issues and risks ... for fire/smoke/carbon monoxide detection. I am not putting my family at risk with questionable technology.Bottom Line - I do not trust that the Protect units are staying connected to the WiFi or the internet -- not to mention each other (w/o WiFi mesh). And, based on other Amazon reviews (read 1-star reviews), I believe that NEST Protect (2nd Gen) units are based on a flawed design and the units are not ready for serious production use in a life or death environment.
