enjoyable
I enjoyed watching this dvd set. A lot of people have complained about the omissions and I agree that it has quite a few but I enjoyed this never the less. An afternoon of beer, friends who hadn't seen it and snacks and everyone had a good time. My friends who are reggae fans and other genres got a real kick out of this dvd set and I am sure that rock n roll has a few more fans now.

Very well done, but...
This entire series was brilliantly done, with commentary by the artists. However, I wanted this to be chronological, starting with about 1954, and a summary of each year before the history of each year starts. I think it was 1955 when Bill Haley did Rock Around the Clock and many historians say that was the first real rock song. They could've pointed out the percussion that wasn't done before, and so on. This package is by genre but even then, it wasn't adequate. For example, Buddy Holly barely got mentioned, and he, as well as Chuck Berry, had a tremendous influence on the Beatles and even guitarists to this day. The Beach Boys could've been mentioned much more and Dick Dale wasn't mentioned at all, though it was good to point out that Pet Sounds inspired Sgt. Pepper. The British Invasion was covered too soon and JFK's murder should've been mentioned cos the Beatles came along at exactly the right time, to life the nation's spirits. Disco barely got mentioned, but that so many artists hate it. Regardless, disco was a major turning point and the Bee Gees and Donna Summer should've been covered. Disco's unique percussion should've been mentioned. Also, there was no mention at all about country rock groups, like the Eagles and Creedence Clearwater Revival. I can say I'm mildly dissappointed.

No complete footage of performances - hotch-potch mess of out-takes
I bought "The History of Rock 'N' Roll" 5 DVD box set about 10 years ago from Amazon. I did watch it back then, and I'm pretty sure I was not impressed with the presentation and editing. The other day, I took it off my shelf and decided to watch it again. BTW, my DVD collection is kept in almost a clean room at about 20 degrees Celsius, normal humidity, no sunlight.3 of the discs cannot be read. They have corrupted and cannot be rescued. I tried 3 different DVD players and also Nero Rescue Agent and it spat them out I have a DVD cleaning / repair machine but that did not fix them.I watched through the 2 discs that still work, and it all came back to me why I did not like it. There is no complete footage of live performances. After 10 seconds of a band or artist playing live, it cuts to someone talking about the bands. I could not stand the interruptions by reporters, historians, band friends, next door neighbours, talking about a band and their songs. The DVDs do not have complete footage of performances and is just a hotch-potch mess of out-takes.I have noted a number of reviewers have corrupted discs. I have thrown the box set into the rubbish bin.

Product did not work
I bought a set of DVDs that were advertised as "like new" but they did not play at all. I'm very disappointed.

Love all the stories
Love all the stories. We saw it on TV way back when and even taped a few episodes. The DVD's are great. There is more stuff on them than what was presented on the television series.

Comprehensive and inspirational
This documentary is so well made, so comprehensive and with so many famous (and infamous) names participating and giving their pen'orth, that it is impossible to imagine anyone ever making another one on the same subject.Authentic footage and interviews, thorough research, enlightening insights and juicy anecdotes, this is an inspirational work which will not only interest those already hooked on the medium, but also draw in those who never realised they were - me, for instance! Watch this and you'll find yourself watching it again, wanting to know more, becoming more adventurous and curious in your musical tastes. I ended up with a broader general knowledge of popular culture as a whole and music in particular. It is a documentary which I use in my lessons as General Arts and Culture teacher, as I think it is essential viewing.
