Dune: The Lady of Caladan: The Caladan Trilogy, Book 2

I gave the Dune sagas a rest and moved to the Expanse series for a while. I recently visited Arrakis and found the Caladan trilogy. It’s not Frank, but it’s very good, action driven. Unlike Frank, his son spends a lot of words reviewing past events as if his readers have short memories. And maybe we do. I appreciated the added realism of delayed heighliners as if space travel will be as common and problematic as today’s air travel. There is a predictability as any detail, seemingly inconsequential at the moment,gains significance in the next couple chapters. But, in spite of this technique there are enough twists and turns to hold my interest.I gotta say that ending the first two installments with cliffhangers is not satisfying, given the lag time between installments. I think readers would prefer some sort of resolution at the installments end. And, since this installment was just published, there’s going to be a wait. At least I got to read the first 2 together. It felt like I was reading one book.Although this book stands on its own, the writing is not nearly as nuanced as dad’s. It’s probably unrealistic and unfair to make such a comparison, but it’s important to set the proper expectations. So, guys, finish it on a satisfying note, take you time.

The story goes on. For those who want more of the Dune story, the author does a good job filling in the details. Plots within plots and the beginning of murder of the Duke and the downfall of Dr. Yueh. Harkonnen treachery and the emperor's scheming make the book interesting. Of course it ends with all the pieces ready to move and the outcome uncertain, but we know how it turns out. Looking forward to the next book.

While some have drawn a line between the original and the new, I find several of the new ones enjoyable like the House series. But these two authors need to let someone else take over. They are blatantly writing for money now. A planet called Elegy is ridiculous and out of place in planet names. Everything is predictable including the foiled plots and the foiled spy rings. The commonwealth rebellion is boring. The Harkonen are laughable. The whole book is a big set up to the next one but it is more a small predictable fizzle. Yawn of yawns.

I surmise that the authors feel no embarassment about how far they are from manifesting either the vision or the craft that Frank Herbert imparted to his original trilogy. I have read ALL the derivative efforts to date that have been put out to capitalize on his genius. All have been somewhat sophomoric but I have continued to hope that they would get better over time. I barely made it through the first of the Lady of Caladan books and only bought the second because of my excitement over the forthcoming movie. It is hard to imagine but the writing and plotlines are only getting worse. Do the authors and the editors ever read the dialogue out loud? I guess that they are maximizing some function that is based on royalties/effort and have realized that people will buy any Dune book out of habit. I stopped reading this one about 10% through it -- I cant take it anymore and will just go back to rereading the originals ever five years or so.

Dune books by Frank Herbert and now his son must currently number into 20s or more. I am a super fan, and never tire of them. This book, the second in a trilogy, which focused on the Atreides family when Paul was a teen, once again provided layers of backstory and insights which make the beloved characters evermore real. I look forward to reading the next installment.

I've read every one of the Dune books and have really enjoyed them all. This book continues the saga of Lady Jessica the mother of Paul Atreidies. It is the set up for the next book when Jessica should be able to return to her beloved Duke Leto and her son. This book also gives more information on the working of the Bene Gesserit and their control of others.

House Atreides, House Corrino, House Harkonnen all.were very enjoyable but this prequel was definitely the most entertaining and begins to show what led to the Atreides taking over Arrakis. Looking forward to.the continuation of this story...

I enjoyed this book and book one of this trilogy. Now I can't hardly wait for book three. Write faster, Brian and Kevin, or I'll send a BG with the gom jabbar! J/K...

I look forward to the “new” Dune novel every year and am never disappointed. I read a lot, but this is head and shoulders above any other series of books (not just sci-fi) I’ve ever read

please don't keep us waiting for the last part of the trilogy ,i absolutely love the duneiverse and the writing just gets better and better .kudos brian and kevin your vision is as good or dare i say better than Franks classics.we need to know what happened to the evermind thousands of years before paul atreides.

Again after reading the Mentats of Dune, the Sisterhood of Dune. This one just falls into place, top class and top quality, one of the best " but they are all good"
