Much better than the Movie!
I liked the fast pace of the story, it felt like you were on that desert and mountain with the characters! I've read this book 3 times and watched the movie, and I still could hardly put it down to eat or sleep!

Wonderful!
There has been a lot of criticism concerning the placement of European aristocrats in this story as well as the geographical features mentioned. The Old West had many big game hunters and visitors from privileged backgrounds, second sons who didn’t inherit their family’s title but hoped to strike it rich in a new country, and wealthy people with the means to travel to the four corners of the earth. The areas described in the book are perfectly pictured. One of the first places I visited when I moved to the Southwest from the East were the Dragoons, known as Cochise’s Stronghold. Thank you, Louis L’Amour, for opening my eyes to the beauty that now surrounds me. I will live out my life here. I only wish I could have told you what a profound life-changing experience it has been. I never would have known this paradise if I hadn’t read your books.

Another awesome western story!!
This is another western that I picked up to read and could not put down till the story was finished. I get so immersed in the thrill of what the characters are doing, saying, or feeling that I feel like I'm there experiencing with them. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!!

Amazing and talented writer.
Louis had so much experience to draw from. It comes out in his stories in suttle droplets that those of us that know his life can appreciate. I have enough experience to appreciate the people and places he wrote about, but most of all I have the experience of his novels. I've been a fan for 46 years and treasure the reading experience of every book I've read. He is truly a legendary author and an extraordinary man whose own life is a novel greater than fiction.

At his best
This is a wonderful story. One of the best features of this book is the majestic descriptions of the area. Desolate but magnificent. I felt I could see it and feel it even though L'Amour's writing style is spare. The clash of the Indian culture against the European invaders is a powerful backdrop to the main story and offers their nobility and strength as well as the tragedy of the struggling people who could not and would not win in the end. The tribute offered to the Indian enemy was chilling. There is a lot of action with both physical strength as well as brilliant strategy applied to win the day. Old fashioned excitement and well worth the read.

Enigmatic Loner
I had read this book years ago. My view then was that is was more stolid, a little plodding This time it was atmospheric and entertaining. What really struck me this time was the visceral description of the southwest and it's inhabitants. You really feel transported. Dusty. thirsty and wary. The story is entertaining. The enigmatic loner who happens upon a hunting party of rich, titled Europeans in an unforgiving landscape. Unfortunately if you ever saw the Sean Connery movie in the late sixties, it will probably convince you to never read a page of Louis L'amour. Pity because they hold up very well and are themselves windows of the past, if only through rose tinted glasses. They could become like popcorn, you can't eat just one!

A Good Read
Engrossing and, as usual with L’Amour, you learn some about the deserts of the west. Also, as usual, there’s some of him in Shalako.

Like the author and his style of writing.
I don’t read too much any more but when I do I look for a western or frontier story. I’ve been reading this authors books for years as well as others. It’s a great way to relax.

Great read. Had an unfortunate experience with another book delivered by Cloudtail India when they delivered the wrong book, but this one made up for it.
