Yes, the weight of your arms from the arm-sling gives the counter balance to hold your head up from the side and back. Whatever chair you are sitting in, even chairs without headrests or armrests, the Dream Sling will keep your head up and arms snug. As for keeping your mouth closed, you could rest your chin more by rotating the pillow a little more forward.

Q: Concerned about its bulk, another volume to schlep while traveling. Can it be squished in a space bag?

Filled with Microbeads, it can be squished down to some degree. Other options, it comes with a drawstring bag, or you can keep the sling around your body and rotate the pillow behind or to the side of you, like a shoulder backpack for easy get up and go. Q: Is there a zipper that will allow access to the beads?

Yes, there is a zipper located under the buckle and you are able to remove the microbead bladder from the cover/arm-sling. Then you can wash the cover/arm-sling without worrying about getting the microbeads wet.
