The Practice of the Presence of God

The book was an easy read. I read it in two settings. As I said, not a teacher but enjoyed reading and found interesting things for my own thinking

I enjoyed this book so much. Reading this helped me with knowing Gods will for me is just doing what I need to do as a wife and mother, joyfully.

Get the original very short "Practice of the Presence of God".In this "critical" version, it's hard to even find his powerful and sincere original words.In this book instead, lots of people with degrees and titles wrote lots of words that are "like a clanging cymbal or a sounding gong" (St. Paul).

I'm a Third Order Carmelite and my community is using this text in a formation (study) group. I've been in Carmel for 16 years, and of all the books we have studied, the ICS (Institute of Carmelite Studies) texts stand out as the most authoritative translations. ICS exists for just that purpose. I have read other translations of this book before, but while those texts might contain some of the following--biographical information on Brother Lawrence, the Letters, the Conversations, Brother Lawrence's Eulogy, the Spiritual Maxims, writings and information on his biographer Joseph de Beaufort, various other essays, and extensive commentary and notes--this volume has them ALL. For a highly readable, and yet scholarly and complete edition of the Practice of the Presence of God, this is the book of choice.

This would not be my first recommended text to the casual reader. I think it would best find a home with someone who has read Lawrence previously and wants to take a deeper dive.

A scholarly and faithful picture of the teachings of Brother Lawrence together with relevant research into the historical and spiritual context of his times.This work is an excellent antidote to modern works claiming (in error) to be the work of Brother Lawrence but in truth representing modern spiritualism and erroneous teaching on the nature of the Church.

What a gift this book is. When you practice the presence of God it's like wrapping yourself up in big blanket of love and mercy.

Brother Lawrence's prescription is simple and understandable and could take a lifetime to perfect.

If you want the background to Brother Lawrence then this is the book for you. This volume is the scholar's choice for The Practice of the Presence of God and provides the textual analysis you won't find elsewhere. I am delighted with the quality of the translation as well as the depth and integrity of the treatment. Up to fairly recently I didn't know this critical analysis existed and I am extremely grateful for the light it casts on a mystic genius of the first order.
