Falling has never been so Fun
I love this game! It's twisted and beautiful and dark and bright all at once. If you love dark stories, if you love bizarre strange worlds, if you love eye candy in games, this is for you.BUT......if you have very little patience, you might consider skipping this game or finally tackling the thing we call patience. That's what I had to do.Alice: Madness Returns is riddled with obstacle courses in wonderland that you, as Alice, must find your way through. Much of this involves jumping, timing, finding hidden rooms, and lots more jumping.I have the PC version for this game. Happily, there are no additional downloads to your computer that I noticed, and there is no internet requirement.JUMPING has almost an infinite variety of trajectories based on how long you hold the jump button, how many times you jump, if you turn while in mid-air, if you hold it so long that you start to float, etc. You can easily over-jump a simple nearby hop obstacle if you're not watching what you're doing. Getting the hang of jumping was for me, by far the hardest task in the game. Everything else I drooled over like a twisted kid that just got their TeddyScares for Christmas. I've watched other peoples' videos on youtube for guides....they seem to have a much easier time with it so maybe it's just that I'm not good at that sort of thing. Fortunately, every time Alice falls off a ledge into the depths of Wonderland, she's instantly teleported back to your last large standing spot, so you can try again. I found this took a lot of tension away and I was able to relax better and focus more knowing that if i messed up, I wouldn't have to restart the whole stage over.COMBAT is ridiculously entertaining. The creatures are funny and grotesque and imaginative, and I'm always excited when I find a new one that I haven't seen before. In the beginning you're given simple slash-with-blade enemies or Bolterflies that you can easily take down with one grind from the pepper grinder. As you progress and learn the feel of your weapons the enemies get more challenging and more fun! Knock back fireballs at your enemy with the umbrella shield and blow their arms off, hit Eyepots in the eye and stun them so you can rush up and slash them to bits, dodge and watch Madcaps miss you and get fork weapons get comically stuck in the ground, and more. (I don't want to give away too much!)In Alice: Madness Returns you go through chapters of different areas of Wonderland, and Alice "wakes up" or "comes to her senses" back to a dark and lovely dreary London setting between each chapter in which she interacts with people from the real world. Mystery abounds and characters seem to have hidden agendas! I've never played the first American McGee's Alice but the story (and also extras in the main menu) have enough details for me to not feel lost at all during this story line. Finding memories along the way in Wonderland also adds delightful little tidbits as you hear people from her past (including her dead family) talking to her about what was. I've never met Alice's family, but just from these memories they seem very fleshed out and real characters to me.So why the 4 stars? Glitches. That's why. Sometimes after you switch to pepper grinder the vorpal blade doesn't wanna come back out. Sometimes the umbrella shield stops working. Once I even couldn't get into a hidden area because the "smash-able" object was registering as a permanent object that was blocking the entrance. Most bugs are easy enough to work around, but sometimes require restarting the game and starting from your last save point, which can be annoying and frustrating. Minimizing the game to look up a guide on another screen also sometimes has problems, the game won't maximize again or stop responding sometimes and I'll have to forcefully close it and restart it.If you still want to enjoy every delicious bit of this gory and gruesome dark tale, and take in every breathtaking view of Wonderland, cheats are extremely easy to implement. I don't recommend using them unless you feel you have to, to work around cheats, (like not being able to defend with the umbrella shield), because the thrill of being on your last rose of health and going into Hysteria mode is adrenaline-pumping excitement. But if you must, feel free, god mode does make things much more relaxing. Is it creepy if I start laughing when I see blood flying as I slash things to bits?Enjoy this game, sink your bloody fangs into it. I know I did :D

Nice to graphic to make me feel like I'm in ...
Nice to graphic to make me feel like I'm in a fairytale(or maybe an nightmare)! It is a little bit tricky to control view point.

an Electronic Arts title
You know something is going to go wrong when it says "value game" on the disk as value often simply means freaking cheap. Can't activate after installing anymore. Have to find a website that shows how to do it with trickery. The free download of American McGee's Alice is no longer available so forget that part. Only buy this if you don't mind jumping through hoops to install a game. Just get it somewhere else in a different format.

It's worth the money. Just need somebody, who is tech-savy to get it working.
I really like this game, one of my favorites. Alice Madness Returns is written very well and does function pretty well in terms of graphics as well as game play, sure there are a few glitches but nothing is perfect. However, with that said I can't deny saying the activation during the installation process isn't something to groan about since it's done where the internet activation doesn't work right off the bat and you have to somewhat struggle with it. It is pretty common with the PC versions of this game, according to my knowledge. Fortunately, there is a way to get it working. Just have to know your way around tech and software to figure out how to install it successfully.

READ THE REVIEWS!!!!!!!!!
OMG!I was so excited, to find this game, at a discounted price! Now, I know why! It didnt take 6 hours to install, but, it did take longer than normal. Graphics were OK, in the game. Not great. And, that cursor! WTF?! No matter what I set the graphics to! The cursor was jerky, at best. And it was SO dark, when you set the settings, to barely see the spade! On an HD LED screen! And, the Anime' style, for the videos was ok, just not the same as in the original. I didnt care for it! This game's traits, should have followed the original. That's what hooked us! If Amazon is reading this, offer a refund! For any bad review! Do I have to cancel the charge? Really!?

Absolutely love it!!
This Game is simply wonderful! I've wanted to play it for a long time but couldn't get my hands on a copy for the PC. The art is amazing and the controls are pretty good. It came in perfect condition and worked as soon as it was installed. It glitches once in a while during battle when there's too much going on onscreen but you can work through it. I would recommend this to anyone that likes third-person fighting games with little puzzles here and there.

Good game but EA and Spicy Horse let it down a bit
Oh wow ... What a game. If you played the original American McGee`s Alice, you`ve got to play this one.As you`d expect, the graphics are so much more fluid and, after levelling them up, the weaponary is a lot stronger although the controls are a little different so you`ll have to get used to them but once mastered, you`ll really enjoy it.In the normal gameplay, Alice gets a new dress after each level completed which gives you the option of swapping around but (unless you fiddle with the .inf files) you won`t get the total of six until you`ve finished the game at which point, you can re-play it with a full wardrobe and in case anyone`s wondering, stripey tights are the order of the day except for the water dress which sees her barefoot. There is a downside to this version though and that is the bugs. No, not the caterpillar or even the flying beetles that drop something suspiciously explosive on her head but the game bugs and if you find something not working as it should do and then `Google` it, you`ll find that a lot of people in a lot of forums have the same gripe but if you`re confident enough to mess about with the .inf files, there are plenty of guys out there with solutions to whatever difficulty you come across ... It`s just a shame that EA and Spicy Horse haven`t cottoned on to it and patched the game accordingly. The concept of the game is brilliant and for the money it`s worth giving it a go even if you hadn`t been captivated by the original version as long as you`re aware that it`s sometimes a bit buggy although most problems can be solved with some in-depth researching. For the male population out there the answer is yes, you can get quite a few other dresses for Alice but you`ll have to work out how for yourselves ;-)

An Amazing Trip through a Wonderland You'll Never Forget
Alice: Madness Returns is one of the few games that I really enjoyed playing. It had the vibe of old-school arcades, the graphics of fantasy worlds unknown and all of this - based on the evergreen story of a girl who ends up in a world of her own make where something is not that great. When it comes to this original story... I was into it totally. The psychiatric scenes and the "real-life" line were fulfilling and managed to keep me interested, even though there are not much action to be done in there. Well, the plot twist was obvious for me from the very start, but it's not a whodunnit title anyway. The gameplay is really enjoyable. It has all a fan of non-shooting actions would like - many keys to use, full control over Alice's actions and several twists such as her becoming a giant where movements are in fact influenced by her big body. For all who are wondering about purchasing this game: If you enjoy the genre, buy it.

When is a raven like a writing desk?
An absolutely beautiful rendition, this game has real eye candy and every corner is filled with delights that draw the eye and make you want to explore wonderland. However, the buggy gameplay and poor control dynamics will leave a nasty taste in the mouth. My least favourite bug is when you start a level with run switched on permanently. If you can find the will to overcome the first few levels and bugs and play on, you will find a deep and rich story filled with rounded characters that expand with every memory collected. But it would seem that the Mad Hatter got his hands on the voicing script somewhere between the last edit and production. The puzzles are kept simple and never over used in a level, this helps to keep the level builds interesting but invisible, moving platforms can bring an element of frustration. I get the feeling that this is not a story to be rushed, but savoured... like a nice cup of tea.If you miss the first Alice, this is a real treat and it's now at a good price.

The controls make it almost impossible to play this on a laptop/PC.
I'm sure it's a great game, but seeing as I bought it for PC, the controls are a bit crazy. The camera is out of control, and it is very difficult to make Alice attack on a keyboard. I get the feeling that this would be much easier to play with an xbox controller, or something similar. The game also lagged quite a lot when I first played it, but after a few minutes of research on google, I soon fixed it, and it does not lag as much anymore. Again, I'm sure it's a really good game, and I was really looking forward to playing it, but the controls just make it extremely frustrating, and I have rage quitted many times because they just refuse to work. I will try and play this again with a joystick controller, and hopefully that will be easier than using a keyboard.

Stunning physics
First, the tech bit: I'm running on an FX-4100 with a GTX 260 and I can play this game in 1920x1200 with everything set to high. The pace is a bit slower going than the original American McGee's, but I think that the physics help to make up. For example, bits of paper will scutter around as you run through it. Alice's character design is graphically detailed, roughly on par with a Sims 3 character. The only downside is that the controls, while still being WASD-based, takes some getting used to! If you go into the keyboard settings though, you can switch it for a joypad and control using that. I find that joypad is easier.
