Cz Expanded clay pebbles are made of 100% natural clay. Cz Expanded Clay Pebbles are inert, pH-neutral, clean and at the same time, decorative. Potting media for Orchids - Used alone or in combination with coconut husk chips, bark, charcoal or other orchid media, Cz Expanded Clay Pebbles porous structure can provide excellent aeration around the roots while its ability to act as a water reservoir will be appreciated by your orchids when water is needed. The size of the pebbles is perfect for medium to large Cattleyas and Laelias. Hydroponic/Hydroculture media - The capillarity and the structure of the clay pebbles ensures good root aeration and prevents rotting, excess acidity and soil pests. Drainage - Compared to gravel, Cz Expanded Clay Pebbles is lighter and can act as a water reservoir. Cz Expanded Clay Pebbles can then release the water when its surroundings needed it. Decoration - With its red color and mostly round shape, Cz Expanded Clay Pebbles is often used as a decorative top-layer for indoor plants and outdoor gardens. As a top layer, it will also prevent the topsoil from drying out quickly.

very light weight.
These clay pebbles are very light weight, and many of them float. They needed to be washed as they were very dusty and dirty and didn't want to contaminate my orchids. I also soaked them in a special solution to bring them to the right pH for my orchids. I ordered a large supply of them, but haven't used them yet. Its always best to wait when transplantiing orchids till they're finished blooming and new root growth is noticeable. When that happens I'll give them a try and hope my orchids benefit from them. Watch for an update in about 6 months... I should know by the how well the orchids have responded to being planted in them.

Excellent!!
I've replaced the media in all of my orchid baskets with this. Some in cedar baskets I've had to plug the gaps with larger lava rocks to prevent these smaller clay pebbles from falling through. I've got a few cocnut husk plantars that work very well with these. I'm halfway done with a second bag of these but that last bit will probably last a long while. Be sure to soak the pebbles a LOT after potting. They carry a decent amount of dust. I definitely recommend !

Not just for hydroponics.
I'm an orchid enthusiast. After watching a You Tube video on the product I decided to give it a try. I'll never buy bark again! I just keep experimenting and find other uses for it. Albeit, I only use it on my Phals and Vandas because the thinner orchid roots have too much of an air pocket to thrive, my Phals and Vandas love it so much so the aireal roots stay green without so much moisture that it rots the plant, especially the Vandas. I've even put my six month old kiekis in it. They're thriving. I don't worry about root rot or infection because of the pellets' properties.I've also discovered that the pellets are great for rooting. I soak them overnight, insert the cuttings and place them beneath a humidity dome. Speedy results with Wandering Jews, Fuchsia, and Swedish Ivy. That's all I've tried so far. Bridal Veil is somewhat difficult to get into the pebbles because of the size of the stems, but I discovered if you hold a small bunch of cuttings between your fingers and use something like the large end of a bonsai stick in a circular motion into the pellets the bunch goes right in. Love the fact that you can use it over and over. A real money saver in the long run. Just don't work with it barefoot. Cz is also very customer oriented and seemes happy to answer any of my questions. Happy gardening.

Better than the more expensive stuff
I chose this product because it was well reviewed and cheap. (Clay pellets are clay pellets, right?) I have them in a hydroponic setup right now next to tanks with other brand pellets. These pellets clearly spread and retain moisture much better than the other pellets. The pellets are also of fairly uniform size with little sand/dust. (I lost only a small amount sieving this through a canister with 3mm pores.)

Warning: Not Inert or pH-neutral. Increase alkalinity in water.
I am using this products for orchids,I really like how clean, uniform shape and size these pebbles are. Since this is first time I am using inorganic growing media, I am very cautious about it and decided to run some tests. I soaked some pebbles in water for 24 hours, and tested its pH, and was stunned by the result. The pH is 9, highest pH my testing kit can detect. These pebbles are not inert and pH-neutral as claimed, they will increase the alkalinity in water, and potentially killed your plants.I wish I had done more researches before buying, apparently this is a common problem that sellers won't inform consumers with, you need to soak these pebbles in pH 5.5 solution for a week or two to neutralize the alkalinity before use.

I ordered way too much for my needs, but ...
I ordered way too much for my needs, but gives me enough for adding more vertical towers in the future. The size varied from dime to nickle sized with very few broken pieces. The clay DOES float (didn't sink after a 48hr soak) so if you're looking to use it in an application where it needs to stay at the bottom, don't. Would definitely order this again in the future for my hydroponic needs.

others looked like pebbles or big quarter size ones
Looked at all the reviews on similar... wanted dime size round... others looked like pebbles or big quarter size ones.. this is exactly what i was looking for. the balls float, but their own weight pushes the other ones down so it doesnt go that much above water line....

Meager amount for $30
Product quality: 5 starsQuantity? I'm not sure how they measure it, but it seems to be somewhat shy of the 25 liters. It looks to be about half of that.

kill my orchids.
I've been soaking it for about 10 days, the root of 44 orchids is all damaged, It's too alkaline to kill my orchids.
