OXO Good Grips Garlic Slicer

I'm new to world of cooking, most especially using garlic gloves. Some recipes call for slicing the gloves and while I found it is possible for me to do that, the garlic was still thick. Then I used this marvelous item and bingo! Thinly sliced garlic and wonderful tasting dishes! The contraption is designed to help the novice chef, very easy to use, easy to clean--making me look like I know my way around a kitchen (when I really don't). My only concern: how to replace the blade when it inevitably becomes dull. Further, there is no designed way to protect the blade when not in use.

First, I have not received nor do I have any financial interest in this product. I have a garlic press purchased a few months ago and it works fine....if you want tiny pieces of garlic. Seeing the tv cooking shows always shows someone with garlic that has been thinly sliced. THIS is what I wanted so I began the search and found this OXO garlic slicer. Wow! Does the job I've been looking for. The unit is made of a high grade durable plastic that appears will hold up well with use. To use the unit, you place a clove of garlic (peeled) in the top container, place the carrier top back in, and then move the whole unit back and forth across a blade. Slices of garlic come up quite good. And the clove carrier protects your fingers from the blade. THIS is a definite plus. As you get to the end of the clove, you may or may not have a small chunk of garlic left but that is not a problem. In addition, you do use just use the weight of your hand to begin slicing. Neat, quick and to the point. To clean, just uses the sink sprayer but caution.... Do not use your fingers to clean out any garlic pieces stuck to the blade. The blade will samurai your finger tips. And I let my unit air dry. Now for the negatives. First, the garlic "carrier" is free sliding. That is, it will slide over the blade whether you are slicing garlic or not. This then leads to an EXPOSED BLADE which is sharp. Now, since the clove carrier moves freely on the "track", obviously the blade will be exposed each time you pick up the slicer or ??? Plus, the blade is also riveted in so it cannot be replaced. But again, how often would you replace such a blade? I would like to see this same unit with an ADJUSTABLE thickness AND...and a way to literally place the clove carrier over the blade and lock it in. However, since I am an adult and I do cut myself "professionally" every so often, this problem has been solved by my putting the unit in a freezer bag after the unit has been cleaned and dried. The bag keeps the unit clean, protects the blade to an extent, and I don't say bad words because I don't cut myself. Overall, yes, I give this unit a 5 star as I am very pleased with the results I get. The CONS I've indicated may or may not be considered personal preference. IF as a amateur chef, you want lotsa garlic sliced thin, this has got to be one of the better garlic slicers around. I do recommend the OXO unit as a BUY.

This thing is awesome!! Slices garlic paper thin and no garlic smell on the hands. I've had mini mandolin slicers before, but this one blows them all out of the water. Slices right down to the last little bit...no waste. Love it!!

This slicer does a great job with thin slices of garlic. I have tried others and this one works the best, especially if you need a lot of garlic.

This replaced another brand garlic slicer that hasn't worked well since the day I got it. This slicer immediately performed very well. I particularly love the double sided blade it has and the uniform paper thin slices it produces. I will be putting it through its paces yearly when it slices 40-50 bulbs with 7-12 cloves each in order to dehydrate all. Even if it only takes 2 cloves at a time, it operates so quickly that it should cut my time for this annual job significantly. The blade doesn't look like it can be replaced though, so, until I know how long the double blade lasts, I can't give it a five star yet.

When I have been able to get the garlic cloves to actually stay in the peeling area, whether I put one clove or three cloves, at least one of the cloves just falls out of the slicer. However, when I have been able to slice, the slicer does a very nice job producing just about paper thin slices. But I become frustrated before I can slice the garlic I need. I will keep trying to develop my technique because the slicer has received so many positive reviews. UPDATE: After trying again for the last two days, I've revised my opinion of this garlic slicer. I was being a little too gentle with the slicer. After placing a couple of cloves of garlic in the slicer, I found if I pressed down very firmly on the garlic holder and moved the handle quickly back and forth, no garlic fell out and the garlic was very nicely sliced. It was also very easy to clean.

The OXO garlic slicer does exactly as advertized. Works well. Safe (no injured fingers). Durable. Easy to clean. It's one of those "must-haves" in your kitchen!

i like this product for making garlic chips. Quality doesnt look cheap.

Ein richtig durchdachter Knoblauchschneider! Herrlich einfach und total effektiv in der Handhabung - so macht Knobihobeln sogar Spaß ;-) Das tool ist leicht zusammensetzbar und für's Spülen mit wenigen Handgriffen wieder auseinanderzunehmen. Was mir auch gut gefällt: der Knoblauchschneider kann nach Gebrauch einfach aufgehängt werden, nichts fällt herunter und er ist jederzeit griffbereit. Ich finde nichts, was ich bemängeln könnte! Ein rundum sehr guter Küchenhelfer ☝🏻
