Let down by illustrations
I have seen a copy of this book. The text is generally fine but, as so often happens with science books, some of the illustrations are highly misleading. Even the cover has a couple of howlers; the spectrum of light leaving the prism is refracting upwards (should be downwards) and several sets of field lines in the magnets diagram are pointing the wrong way. Some child is going to be confused.

I homeschool my 12 year old, and we haven’t really ever used a science curriculum - just learned from books, podcasts, etc. He warned to get a deeper into physics so I bought this book. To be honest, I was a little concerned that it would be too young for him, as the only Usborne books I’ve seen are for babies and toddlers. But we both really like it. The illustrations seem like they would work for any age. They’re easy to understand but not babyish. And it explains concepts from a basic level, just for background, but without belaboring things. It doesn’t dumb things down to the point not giving kids any credit, like some books we’ve tried. That’s one of my favorite things about it. Just to be clear, this is not a textbook or curriculum or workbook. There are no labs and it really doesn’t even give activities per se, but it illustrates people doing things that you can easily replicate in real life if you choose to. A child could read this book on their own if their reading skills allow, but since I’m using it as part of my child’s school, we read it together and talk about it. All in all, I think this is a well-written and well-illustrated book that makes physics accessible to kids in a non-threatening, interesting, non-scary way. I would say that kids as young as 7 or 8 could get a lot out of this book with a bit of support from their grownup. I highly recommend it. (Also, the writing is charmingly British, which makes me smile.)

My 7 yr old has a million questions like "if there was a pool of liquid oxygen could we breath under water?". Can't get enough of these types of books. Recommend for any kids with a curiosity for science
