Review: This book is one of the greatest books I have ever read. To begin with, the topic is not obvious to deal with, but Ellenberger leads us in the discovery of the unconscious intelligently and easily. Even though it was written in 1970, this book remains actual and helps to understand the fundamentals of trends that are occuring and reoccurring. Remarkable! Review: One of my favourite foundational books when it comes to exploring and understanding the lengthy and profound developments of Psychoanalysis. Goes through each important founding father and reaches as far back to ancient shamanic practices and rituals to explain how the Psychodynamic approach came to be.

This is a superb book. It is clearly written, engaging, and extremely informative. This book is undoubtedly one of the very best books about the history of treatments of mental illness ever written.

I am only part way through this, but as a retired psychotherapist and teacher of psychotherapy, I wish I had read this 40 years ago. On the other hand I would not have had the perspective on the subject matter that I have now. The biggest surprise about it is how very readable it is, and not at all the dry and formidable tome that its size and length might suggest. Not that size and length matter.
