worth it for spreading network load
With the advent of 802.11ac, concerns over reducing network load over wireless is decreasing a lot.But if you have b/g, then you really want to minimize the number of devices on wireless. And even if you have the substantially faster n-150 or n-300, WLAN loads can quickly become annoying if you have everything on wireless. You might think you don't have a lot, but if you're a 4 person family, you might have 2-3 mobile devices per person on wifi (smart phone, tablet, laptop), which is 12 devices. If you have a PS3 or similar game machine, that adds one and if you have an HTPC then that adds another. Have a friend or two over and that may add between 2-4 more devices. The number of devices on wifi can quickly become too much even for 802.11n - 300Mbps wireless routers. For this reason, taking as many devices off wireless as possible, knowing that there are so many wireless devices in the home, is often a good idea. ethernet is also more consistent and reliable as a general rule, with fewer dropped packets. Given that, and especially given that Apple laptops no longer come with ethernet, this is a pretty worthy investment. And if you're a traveler, then it's possible that the office you go visit, or the hotel you're in, doesn't have wifi. ethernet only places are getting fewer, so the concern may last only for a few more years, but just in the last year, 2 of my 11 trips have been in locations that had ethernet but wifi was inaccessible to guests/visitors. Which meant that a captive portal'd ethernet connection was my only option.Given that, you have two adaptor choices: usb to ethernet or thunderbolt to ethernet. When you're traveling, the chances of you needing that thunderbolt port are few, but the chances you have USB devices you need to plug in are high, so get this thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor instead and keep those USB ports free.there are, of course, other options. like Buffalo mini router or similar, which is a tiny device that pulls an ethernet connection and acts as a simple wireless ap. But that just adds one more device to travel with, and the associated cables of that device. This method is understandably easier.
