I’ve plowed through a lot of literature on this topic and been fairly dissatisfied with the results. Either the book was a recitation of the problem without concrete solutions or the solutions presented amounted to, “Push harder, but with a boyish smile.”This book, however, provides real, workable solutions to helping boys in school. The biggest obstacle you will face after reading the book is getting the teacher(s) on board with the alternatives. I’ve found a good deal of resistance, but I haven’t given up.

A Must Have Tool for Parents of Boys
I would highly recommend this book to any parent of a boy. I know that this is a broad, sweeping statement, and that not all parents will face the challenges, which this book highlights, however, I was relieved to discover in reading this book that I am not alone. I was heartbroken, when at three, my son was transitioned into a class of four and five-year-old children without any of his peers. There, a Pre-K teacher, told him that he was `stupid' and `didn't listen' because he could not sit still or write his letters, and that he had ADD. Her dissatisfaction with him eventually escalated until she physically hit my son. He was traumatized by this incident. I subsequently removed him from this school. However, when I saw the news program featuring the Michael Gurian Institute and this book, I tried to get it from Barnes & Nobles and Borders only to discover it was sold out. I then ordered it from Amazon and have not been able to put it down. It has given me the tools to mitigate successfully potential negative interactions with his current teachers and caregivers, and to build bridges that celebrate his uniqueness as a young boy entering the educational arena. A Must Have!!

I understand him better now...
As a mother of a young boy(5) who is experiencing several of the symptoms described in the book (disliking school, lack of participation, academic difficulties, occasional disruptive behavior, etc), this book has helped me, if nothing else, to be more empathetic, understanding and patient towards him. This in itself is worth a solid recommendation for the book. Our sons need love, support and understanding, despite the aggravation that their behaviour sometimes causes. In a world where teachers and doctors are quick to diagnose ADHD and prescribe drugs, this book also equipped me to have better discussions with doctors and teachers. It does not provide a quick fix, but strong support along the journey.

If you have a son you need this book
Many of our public schools are failing our boys. My son was an A student until middle school and he took a dive. I realized that many teachers were unsympathetic in how he was transitioning. It's almost as if everyone is so helpful and kind to the child until they go into middle school. All of a sudden he's lazy and disrespectful. I've meet more disrespectful teachers than students. Who is supposed to be the adult? You must be an advocate for your child. Finding extra help such as tutors or family members to encourage is helpful. Your son is still there. He's just changing and you must see him for who he is NOW! Get this book, it will really open your eyes.

great book
I have three boys.. and so anything that helps me understand them more and how they tick is helpful. I enjoyed reading this book a lot, because it helped me look at the whys differently and be a lot more proactive about solutions.

Great resource for parents, teachers, or anyone else who mentors boys.
This is a great book that really does explain the minds of boys well. I read it when I was a teacher; our whole staff read it as a group and it really helped us understand how to help the boys in our classes succeed. Now that I am having a boy after two girls, I'm re-reading it as a refresher to help give him the support he needs to be awesome(and successful).

Great book! Fascinating read!
My boys are just starting school this fall, so I wanted to read about how to best help them in their educational experience. The author does a great job in giving specific, practical advice in how to help your son succeed in school, starting from toddler years in the home, all the way through high school, and even college. This is definitely a worthwhile read for any parents who wish to help make school a positive experience for their sons.
