A heartfelt classic
I think it’s fair to say that this short story mirrors the feeling of parenthood precisely. It’s a lovely book for before bed or naptime, or if you want a nice calming story for anytime of day. I love how the characters try to describe ways of measuring love, which is very much a young child’s way of critically analysing that feeling. But, quantifying its magnitude is really not the point (there’s always a bigger number in an infinite list). There are types of love that just cannot be compared, like that of a parent towards a child and vice versa, and that’s what I took away from this children’s story, particularly as a new parent myself. The watercolour illustrations are gorgeous and timeless, and although quite stripped back on some pages, offer plenty of detail on others (get your kid to spot the mushrooms if they are losing interest at any point). The board book version which we own is very sturdy and has very little wear to show for the past couple years of use. Despite having read this in excess of a few hundred times by now, I still never tire of its heartfelt message, and I don’t think I ever will. 5 stars all round.
