Legends of the Fall [Blu-ray]

This and A River Runs Through It are easily my two favorite Brad Pitt movies. Every father with sons should watch them.

This movie holds a special place with me. The story, the cinematography (it won an Oscar for this) and the actors are perfection. It's so majestic and full of spirit. It is my favorite movie of Brad Pitt's career. I was in awe of him & couldn't imagine anyone looking & acting so beautifully . . .I swear, he'll take your breath away! All the other actors are superb and in their best roles. The story takes you through the history of that time and you never know what surprise is coming (sad & loving). Director, Edward Zwick created a masterpiece. The DVD took a little time getting here BUT it was so worth it. It is in perfect shape (new)!

This is my all time favorite Brad Pitt movie. All of the actors and actresses are phenomenal in it and I love the storylines as well as the plots. Yes, it's a pretty long movie, but it's definitely well worth it in my opinion.

It is a bit hard to describe this movie which covers just about everything. It is a family drama, a love story, a war saga, a Western and a multi decade organized crime conflict set all around the world, but centered in Montana in the early and mid twentieth century. Anthony Hopkins plays Colonel William Ludlow, a retired calvary officer who quit his commission over the government's mistreatment of the native Indians to try to raise his three sons: Alfred (Aidan Quinn), the oldest, is an intellectual who plays by the rules but no one loves, Tristan (Brad Pitt), is the wild middle child, and then there is Samuel (Henry Thomas), who naively drags his siblings into service in World War I. Samuel brings home Susannah (Julia Ormond) from Harvard, who remarries Alfred after Samuel dies on barbed wire. Alfred is elected to Congress and gets mixed up with two Irish bootlegging brothers, who are in cahoots with the local corrupt sheriff, played by Kenneth Welsh (Windom Earle from Twin Peaks), whose complicit silences speak volumes. Tristan's native American wife, Isabel, is shot to death by a thuggish cop with a misfiring Tommy gun, and things escalate from there, with one character undergoing death by impaled pitchfork and another undergoing terminal engine trouble. In a rare bit of subtlety, Susannah, blows her brains out off screen. In the end, the Ludlow family prevails, at least what is left of it, with Tristan forced into exile in the wilderness where he is most at home. He has a Faulknerian dance with a wild bear in 1963 leading to a great death, but the audience can debate whose. This film has everything: great acting, a sweeping score and majestic scenery, and a story that does not know when to stop thrilling you.

Good movie

First, lets the talk the negative reviews. Almost half the 1 stars were "DVD didn't work", "I purchased it in another language by accident", and "Not my style". I used Amazon Prime Video and I watched it for free with just a few ads in it. Amazon Prime is $100 a year and I get about $500 worth of free stuff a year and I don't have to worry about shipping or DVD quality. I say only $500 because that's all I have time for. Every time Amazon produces a movie it is free for Amazon Prime - that alone is over $200 a year in worth. Just saying.So, now it is my turn to write a review.The greatest men I served in the military with loved this movie. Not love like some of you love the Transformers. It broke their hearts, because they live with broken hearts. The Tristans of the military. The perfect soldiers. One of those veterans PTSD paid him a visit one last time. This is a classic for all bands of brothers who's seen some s*** and who are now the calm and collected men who hunt nightmares. You may not be there yet, but it'll happen or you haven't calmed down yet because your battle is still raging. Or you don't know what I'm talking about and probably never will.I'm not saying it might be classic, I'm saying it is a classic for combat veterans. Theory vs. fact.I am not counting the outliers, there are outliers for everything and I never count them because outliers give people an excuse to say stupid stuff - for example: when I served in Korea for two years, not all Koreans used chopsticks and everyone who hasn't been there would say they all do. A small percentage do not, because some had only one arm. Nothing is 100%, but unless it is over 7.1% I don't talk about it. If you want to be the 7.1% have at it you amazing Power Ranger, Space Ninja, and Water Sniper.

No movie has ever moved me in the way that this one has. The music by conducted and composed by James Horner exudes a haunting match to a tale of longing and love so deep; that it cannot truly be put into words. Love between Father and sons, Tristan and Susannah, each Brother to each Brother and of course husbands and wives and lovers too. It asks the viewer to recognize worlds that exist outside of time and space as we know them. Legendary worlds and exemplary souls and a time that was cleaner, more pristine and yet filled life's deepest heartbreak and challenges. Tristan and Susannah and each character in the Ludlow crew. Absolutely one of my all time favorite films. The music literally sweeps us away into this journey of heart and soul back around the time of WW1. The acting is magnificent beyond compare and I think Julia Ormond is brilliant. All of the actors do a superb job in this film. My heart was filled to the brim with a time when Native Americans and though living in a time when the world was not ripped to shreds yet. The cinematography of the land in Montana is breathtaking. The strain of the Heart Breaking open scenes of the brothers and the one woman who was like a special gem whom none of them could really fully appreciate, in the role of Susannah Fincannon. The subtle nuances of her acting is nothing less than stellar. The nuance of all relationships and politics, war and peace are all intertwined into this one movie. The best of the best for me. Brad Pitt was in his glory days here. He was indeed a Legend as Tristan.The message of this movie will reside in my Heart forever.

„Legenden der Leidenschaft“ (Legends of the Fall) USA 1994Colonel William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) hat die Armee verlassen, der Krieg hat ihn angewidert, er will von staatlich befohlenem Töten und der Obrigkeit nichts mehr wissen. Mit seiner kultivierten Frau und den drei Söhnen Samuel, Alfred und Tristan ist er in die Einsamkeit einer weiten Landschaft in Montana gezogen und hat mit seinem indianischen Freund One Stab (Gordon Tootoosis) eine kleine Ranch gegründet. Dort lebt auch sein weißer Mitarbeiter Decker (Paul Desmond) mit seiner indianischen Frau Pet (Tantoo Cardinal) und der bezaubernden kleinen Tochter „Isabel Zwei“ (über Sekwan Auger ist nichts bekannt außer dieser und einer zweiten Filmrolle 2003 in „Dreamkeeper“). Der Colonel ist sehr bald von seiner Frau verlassen worden, steht aber in Briefkontakt mit ihr, und sie kündigt auch an, dass Sohn Samuel (Henry Thomas), der inzwischen in Harvard studiert hat, demnächst mit einer Braut nach Hause kommen wird. Susannah (Julia Ormond) ist eine herzerfrischende, temperamentvolle Schönheit, beim ersten Anblick sind nicht nur die Brüder, sondern auch der Colonel von ihr bezaubert. Drei Männer und eine Frau, da braut sich ein Schicksal zusammen, das mit einfühlender Distanz von dem Cree-Indianer Gordon Tootoosis erzählt wird und das nicht alle überleben, zuletzt auch nicht Susannah selbst.Zunächst stürzen sich die Brüder, gedrängt von dem etwas wirklichkeitsfernen Samuel und gegen den Willen des Colonels, in den Ersten Weltkrieg gegen Deutschland. Samuel fällt, Alfred wird verwundet, Tristan zerreißt es fast vor Schmerz, weil es ihm nicht gelang, Samuel zu schützen. Obwohl kein Indianer, folgt Tristan (Brad Pitt) mit seiner ungezügelten Mentalität archaischen indianischen Riten. So schneidet er dem toten Bruder das Herz heraus und schickt es zum Begräbnis nach Hause, anschließend tötet und skalpiert er zwei deutsche Soldaten.Als Tristan nach dem Krieg zurück ist in Montana, entwickelt sich, was vorher zu ahnen war, eine leidenschaftliche Beziehung zwischen ihm und Susannah, die ihm in ihrer Bedingungslosigkeit ähnlich ist. Alfred (Aidan Quinn), sozial ehrgeizig, kultiviert und angepasst, sieht eifersüchtig zu. Seine Stunde ist gekommen, als Tristan, getrieben von Freiheitsdrang, die Ranch wieder verlässt und von einer Weltreise an Susannah schreibt, sie solle nicht auf ihn warten. Sie heiratet den ungeliebten Alfred, der in der Stadt bald Karriere macht und Kongressmitglied wird. Nach Jahren kehrt Tristan zurück und geht mit der inzwischen erwachsenen Indianer-Tochter Isabel Zwei (Karina Lombard) eine Ehe ein, kann sich aber nicht in die weiße Gesellschaft integrieren. Sein mit Alkoholschmuggel bestrittener Lebensunterhalt bringt ihn in Konflikt mit Bruder Alfred, und als bei einem Hinterhalt Tristans Frau von Regierungsbeamten erschossen wird, scheinen die familiären Gräben unüberbrückbar.Der Film fesselt nicht nur durch exzellente Schauspielerleistungen vor allem bei Brad Pitt und Anthony Hopkins, sondern auch durch einen bewusst offenen Regiestil von Edward Zwick („Shakespeare in Love“). Seine Schauspieler sind stets emotional beteiligt an dem Geschehen und bringen von sich selbst Nuancen und eine Spontaneität ein, die nicht „gespielt“ werden können. Selbst der Erzähler Tootoosis handelt weniger als „Schauspieler“ als aus einer indianischen Mentalität heraus und verfällt gegen Ende, nachdem die Ranch gegen Polizisten und Bandenmitglieder verteidigt werden musste, in ein kleines Siegesritual gegenüber den erschossenen Feinden. Dieser Regiestil, von der Presse häufig als banal empfunden, nimmt Zuschauer durch seine Zwanglosigkeit und unaufdringliche Frische bis zum Schluss gefangen. Die Schicksalhaftigkeit des Geschehens, die emotionalen Bindungen, Entscheidungen und Fehlentscheidungen der Figuren, sie werden verstärkt durch die grandiose Landschaft (gedreht wurde in einem Indianerreservat in Alberta/Kanada), durch den weiten Himmel, die Wolken, den Wind, das spezielle Licht, den Fluss und die Hügel - eine Landschaft von eigener, archaischer Lebenskraft. Alles, was Menschen tun und empfinden in dieser Umgebung, scheint bedeutungsvoll, nichts zufällig oder nebensächlich. So hat es etwas heldenhaft Widerständiges und nichts Zerbrochenes oder Dahinsiechendes, wie der Colonel nach einem Schlaganfall weiterlebt: Hopkins` meisterhaftes Mienenspiel verfügt selbst bei asymmetrisch verschobener Gesichtsmuskulatur noch über nuancierten emotionalen Ausdruck.Archaisch und von indianischer Mentalität ist letztlich auch die Kreisstruktur des Geschehens. Zu Beginn wird Tristan als vorwitziges Kind von einem Bären angefallen und verletzt, wobei er eine Bärenkralle als Talisman behält. Gegen Ende ist es Tristan, der beim Kampf mit einem Bären stirbt. “Es war ein guter Tod“, konstatiert Erzähler Tootoosis anerkennend. Und der Bär? Bart the Bear spielt sich selbst, stellenweise geschickt als ausgestopftes Fell eingebracht, in den dramatisch aktiven Passagen ist er als langfristig dressiertes Tier sehr lebendig. Prachtvoll. Majestätisch. Ein Mythos. Die latente Tiefenbindung zwischen Tristan und dem Bären ist nicht weniger schicksalhaft als die mit Susannah.

Légendes d'automne nous plonge dans des décors sauvages du Montana. Un patriarche vit avec ses 3 enfants tous différents des un des autres. Quand ils apprennent en 1914, la guerre en Europe, le cadet veut participer à cette guerre suivi par ses deux frères, le plus jeune n'en reviendra pas. Une légende comme celle-ci restera dans la mémoire de cette famille. Tourné avec de bons acteurs, un petit chef-oeuvre du cinéma.

Il film 'Vento di passioni', realizzato nel 1994 con la regia di Edward Zwick, è basato su un romanzo di Jim Harrison, 'Legends of the Fall'. Racconta dei profondi cambiamenti avvenuti nella famiglia del colonnello Ludlow (Anthony Hopckins), diventato un allevatore di bestiame dopo avere contestato il trattamento che il governo statunitense ha usato nei confronti degli indiani Dakota, con l'arrivo di Susannah, promessa sposa di Samuel, il più giovane dei suoi figli. Anche Alfred e Tristan (Aidan Quinn e Brad Pitt) subiranno il fascino dell'inquieta fanciulla e affronteranno anche i problemi del primo conflitto mondiale, che li vedrà tutti arruolati. Girato negli scenari suggestivi del Montana, il film ha giustamente raccolto numerosi consensi e un meritato Oscar per la migliore fotografia di John Toll. Ottima l'interpretazione degli attori, tra i quali un giovane Brad Pitt e le musiche di James Homer. Insomma, un film da vedere.

3兄弟の絆は2人の兄が弟を気遣う関係から始まっています。ところがその弟が婚約者を家に連れてくることから運命が変わっていきます。父の反対を押し切り出征した3人ですが、可愛がっていた弟の死に打ちひしがれて帰ってきたブラッド・ピット。弟の死、婚約者の死と同じ思いを持つ2人がひかれ合い、愛し合うようになっていきます。兄のアイダン・クィンも彼女を密かに愛していました・・・身寄りのない彼女が兄弟の家にとどまったことから起きた兄弟の間に諍いが・・ブラッド・ピットの野生的な魅力に女性も父親も抵抗できない・・・ただ彼は彼を愛する人たちを結果的には幸せにできなかったという皮肉。(愛され過ぎて不幸を招く男性？)兄のアイダン・クィンの自分なら幸せにできるという思いが打ち砕かれたのは気の毒すぎる気がします。最後に兄弟、親子の絆が取り戻せたのは良かったのですが、結局ブラッド・ピットは風来坊気質で家に収まりきれない・・・3人兄弟に愛されるジュリア・オーモンドが嫌味のない魅力的な女性を演じていて素敵でした。だからこそ結末は辛いかも・・・アンソニー・ホプキンスはもっとクセの強い父親かと思っていたのですが、息子を思う父親役も似合っていて良かったです。3人兄弟、父、婚約者のキャラが魅力的でみていて飽きない作品です。原作は読んだことはないのですが、心に沁みる映画です。
