Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. When Hassan and his family, led by Papa (Om Puri), move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside, they are undeterred by the fact that only 100 feet opposite stands a Michelin starred classical French eatery. However upon encountering the icy proprietress, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the Kadam family realise they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Outraged by the new arrivals, Madame Mallory is determined to have their business shut down. As cultures clash and food flies, a heated battle escalates between the two establishments – until, that is, Hassan’s passion and talent for French cuisine begin to enchant Madame Mallory and even she can’t deny this young chef could have what it takes to garner even more acclaim for her beloved restaurant. This, along with his new-found friendship with her beautiful sous chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), starts to weave a magic between the two cultures and, despite their different tastes, they discover an unlikely recipe for success that surprises them all. An uplifting and feel-good cultural feast full of Indian spices, French sophistication and British wit, THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY is directed by Lasse Hallström and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Juliet Blake. Review: La film est incroyable! - Incredible ... A story of life, love, laughter, heartache, joy, passion and ambition....a story of beauty and heartfelt honesty ..... You feel every emotion, you taste the food and you want to be there enjoying the fun. Helen mirren plays her role of Madame Mallory as always in a superbly beautiful way that radiates class and real elegance. She allows the viewer to feel her pain, know what she wants and where she wants to be. Normally in a film like this you would want to see her fail but it's quite the opposite, You long for her to succeed and find true happiness. Manish Dayal is so delicate with his portrayal of Hassan Haji that you love him from the very beginning but can't help but fall in love with him by the end of the film. Such a magical film that I will most definitely want to watch again and again. La film est incroyable! Review: An unexpected joy - I don't often feel compelled to write a review about a film- good or bad - but The Hundred Foot Journey is now one of the few. In short, it was wonderful. I watched it with my partner and two close friends - all of us with different individual interests and empathies, but all four of us LOVED IT. It was a simple film plot but it was uplifting, well acted and joyful. A reminder of what it is to be human and why life is worth living. If you want an uncomplicated but fulfilling film I wholly recommend this one.

Elegant and rich, unusual movie
A mix of India and France, in a delightful comedy or romantic comedy with plenty of recipes. Nicely digestible. Some extraordinary culinary experiences there if you are into cooking and baking ! Prepare some food before watching !

A favourite to watch again many times.
Warming and enjoyable. Helen Mirren is superb in this role, though I am a great fan of ALL her recent films, and find no consolation in having to wait for her appearance again on screen. I loved the way the Asian family talked things through, the sons trying to educate the father when everything seemed lost, the way the father held the family together, letting his sense of humour surface when in a tight spot. Two little niggles though ---- I became more annoyed that the young French girl did not get full recognition for her skills in promoting the young Asian man to his notoriety and fame., and at times ( although my hearing is good, I had to re -run the film to catch some of the speech).

Very Good, light hearted. A film to take you away from the troubles in life.
I first watched this film on a cruise, loved it. So had to buy the dvd. A lovely gentle story. One a little like "Marigold Hotel" that takes you away from the troubles of the world. Lovely predictable story well acted of course. Helen Mirren cannot do a bad film in my opinion. You can almost smell the cooking, the lovely Indian spices we are all loving as a nation. The love the Indian family have for each other and the way they worked together as a family. Something that families are losing these days. Beautiful film would recommend.

Good family viewing
Nice warm film, just about plausible story: I enjoyed it but had a bit of trouble understanding the dialogue (English always spoken with strong Indian and French accents). Worth watching if you can manage without subtitles.

I love this movie, I have watched it many times, I am an immigrant myself, I was 17 years old when my parents came to the United States. However, I would give anything to live in that beautiful village and shop at that market. And the cooking, yam yam, I still want to make that omelet!!! The acting is exquisite.

I live in Canada. This DVD is a Region 2 (for Europe) DVD. Meaning I require a multi-region player. I tried to play it on my computer that has a DVD player, but that didn't work either. Rarewaves kindly offered to give me a 20% refund and keep the DVD! I asked them for a refund but they want the DVD back. No problem, I don't want to keep a DVD that doesn't work - but that means I have to pay postage. That will be nearly $15.00!!! So, the DVD only cost $8.00, Rarewaves will not reimburse me for the postage so I'm stuck with a video that doesn't work - but Rarewaves will give me 20% of the purchase price. yahoo.
