The Guitar Style of Jerry Reed (Guitar Recorded Versions) Paperback – Illustrated, August 1, 1994

Hal Leonard has just reissued this. I have to deduct two stars for this reason. First, the GRVs (Guitar Recorded Versions) series is considered top guitar material, typically providing a thorough and accurate representation of what was played. Even so, some folks complained when GRVs transcribed saxophone and vibe parts for the Charlie Christian GRVs.But omitting an entire guitar solo from a GRVs book would be inexcusable. Yet that's the case here, as with "Jerry's Breakdown" where the rocking improv section is simply ignored. Amsco Publishing is famous for their "Ad Lib Solo Next 87 Bars" transcriptions, but here the solo is simply excluded. Now to be honest, I've yet to thoroughly examine the book in comparison to the recordings, but to find even one such glaring omission deserves a harsh rebuking.However, the main themes for all songs appear to have been properly transcribed. Also included, the author clearly states what audio source was used in transcriptions, this being a great convenience that should be the standard, but sadly is often overlooked in music books. The author also includes a tutor of Jerry's style in the back of the book, which is fine, but it's not traditionally what GRVs have been about. GRVs should be about faithfully recreating an artist's musical performance in correct and complete detail, not providing great amounts of tutelage or omitting solos.Lastly, some of the transcriptions are from "Chet Atkins Picks on Jerry Reed" (1974) which is out of print for over twenty years and never issued on CD. However, if you Google "chet atkins picks on jerry reed" and "jukebox" there's a certain place with a low bitrate stream. It's the only place I've ever seen it. Capturing the stream or digging the audio file out of your internet cache is on you. And if you know what to look for all the other songs are also on the web.

A very good book and the tabs are accurate. I am very curious if it's a publishing rights issue as to why they haven't transcribed "The Claw" as not only is it his utmost classic but the ultimate finger picking acoustic instrumental. I warn that that some songs in here don't have the full tablature, like "Stumpwater" doesn't include the solo bit that he doubles with his voice. Doesn't have the complete "Jerry's Breakdown" either but does have the main important points, basically to where you can rightfully say you know how to play it. "Swarmin'" is well worth it as it unlocks some serious mystery behind the construction and logic of his Open G bluegrass theory. Worth it, you'll learn some good stuff. There are very competent versions of Claw out there if you look for them on the web for free.

Good. Interesting. But it does not included "My Priscilla". Try finding "The Jerry Reed Collection". It is out of print. Someone has the tabs, because others have their version on Youtube.

I was confident that Craig Dobbins would do a great job transcribing these tunes. He did. Now let's see if I am man enough to play them.

Very accurate transcriptions a lot of time went into this book.

This book is great.I was looking everywhere for a copy but since he passed on...well...the sellers out there saw fit to charge upwards of 500 dollars a copy.SO GLAD I WAITED.Already getting finger cramps trying Jerry's banjo runs.If real country is what you're trying to play, buy this.

A weak selection of songs, some are even Chet Atkins recordings of Jerry songs...
