Very interesting but very brief
This is the ultimate in beginning surfing. Maybe too beginning as there was not much to it. I would have loved a book that was a little longer.

Easy and Interesting!
I bought this for my boyfriend and I when we were planning a weekend trip to San Diego that included a surfing lesson. We didn't really prep much for the lesson, besides reading through the book on the flight over, but it raelly gave us a lot of info that was helpful. It's a very practical guide, giving you some maneuvers to practice, as well as some tips on ettique, lingo and what to expect your first time out. Plus, it's written as if you're talking to your old buddy from high school who is walking you through the basics of surfing in his free time. Enjoy this and your time in the surf!

Just add water!
Doug Werner's style is reassuring. There is quite a bit which can be said about surfing and the learning curve incumbent in its practice. As with any sport, the rules, the culture, and the hazards are all covered here in a gentle manner. It might not seem so from the outset, yet it is implied that surfing is not as simple as just going out there and riding waves. Although not covered in depth, Doug touches upon the social aspects of engaging in an activity where expertise can mean safety for yourself and others in the water. He also pays respects to the likes of Duke Kahanamoku and Pat Curren. From the novice point of view, basics of equipment and essential technique are covered. Veterans would probably laugh at this book or wax nostalgic about their gremmy days.A sister publication devoted to longboards has a commercial tie-in from a board maker. This book endorses a surf academy. It is this endorsement which hammers home the idea that proper learning is essential. Besides, I doubt that one could read and surf at the same time.

I think it helped me.
My first-ever surfing lesson (on my 50th birthday) went, I believe, a little better for me because I read this book. I can't prove that, but I think it helped. The book was also fun to read. It includes a bit of history and a bit of science, but mostly it's about how to surf and how not to make an ass of yourself on the beach. Both of these are useful things to know, I would think.

A bit lacking in substance
This book is perfect as an inspiration. But it lacks a bit in substance regarding the basic step by step on how to surf. I learnt to SUP with another book thats alike in price and format, admittedly a bit easier. But still instead of focusing on history and tips on where to buyshow more pictures, more security things and step by step. Keep up the good work because it's still a good book at the core.

Pleasant, not a lot of depth even for beginners
Reasonably informative beginner book, one will definitely learn something from it, but I don’t see it giving a newbie enough specific steps about how to start. In current times, few articles online will cover similar ground effectively.

Great Intro Guide to Surfing
Great intro guide to surfing. I'm going to learn to surf this year and this book made me feel comfortable digging in and doing it. The writing was pleasant and the book's pace was brisk. There were no awkward moments or boggy sections. I finished it quickly and got a lot of information from it.
