Thanks for your question. While this may provide some measure of protection from wind we would definitely recommend using some type of windscreen.

Will this work in a basic aluminum can alcohol stove?

Make your stove out of one of the smaller diameter aluminum cans. I used a 5.5 ounce V8 can. (about 53mm diameter)
Then, instead of this stand, get the newer model Evernew Cross Stand 2:

The newer stand costs more but it will stably fit down around the smaller diameter burner. This one will not.

So, yes, and no.  If one has just the stove without the simmer top, then yes, it will fit.  If you think you want to use the simmer top (as one may do with the Trangia 25 and 27 cooksets with integrated wind shield and pot stand) then these cross stands (this one, and others sold here) then no, the stand will NOT fit.
