Almost great (contains spoilers)
This is a very good film that had the opportunity to be a great one. Both Sally Field and Danny Glover are great, and the sets and location filming brings the Great Depression back to life. Less confidently handled is the issue of racism, which given the time (1935) and place (Waxahachie TX) is evidently supposed to be a main theme of the film given that the male lead character is a black man. The first two scenes that dealt with the racial issue were fine, however the third was not. Toward the end of the film the Ku Klux Klan pops up from out of nowhere and beats up Moses, the character played by Danny Glover, for no reason. The KKK was undoubtedly a terrorist organization but they also had motives for their actions, and there is no motive here that the viewer can detect. Moses has done nothing wrong and really has not behaved in any way that should upset the power structure. The appearance of the KKK almost appears to have been thrown in at the last minute while filming simply because some realized that there was no scene with the KKK in a move where racism is a strong theme. The scene with the KKK has the effect of making he film not quite believable Finally, the ending with the scene in the church where all of the characters from the film, living and dead, are reunited is just plain stupid. Still, more than worth a watch because the story is good, the main actors are great and the production values are great. Other films which handle the issue of racism much better are "In the Heat of the Night", "Odds Against Tomorrow" and "Donovan's Reef".

Places in the heart
This movie is a enjoyable movie!! This movie is amazing for the acting abilities of all the actors & it's a perfect movie for those with any problems to realize there will be a way out!! I haven't watched the movie in 20 years but this made an impression on me, I think with the caring of all involved made you feel for each person in general!! My Dad's friend wanted us to enjoy the movie & told us she lives in a fantasy world & as I watched the movie listening I understood how hard life was at times & how sometimes the heart does rule your life!! I was 20 then so not much had happened but the ending was the best part & I liked the fact it was a happy ending even though it wasn't true!! My husband recently died after I purchased this movie, I remember her struggles & I now understand some of why she believed the way she did & did what she did because she was forced to!! I truly do think everyone will enjoy the movie on so many levels, the acting is surprisingly amazing, John Malkovich as the blind boarder is just so amazing to watch!! Danny Glover as the black man to help a family that knows nothing & Sally Field as a lady that is lost after her husbands death truly makes you feel part of this movie!! You will respect each person in this movie & understand where they are coming from & root for them as well as want justice for them!! You will want to beat up those that do wrong & forgive those that make mistakes!! You will enjoy the movie, there are so many things that happen in this movie but I want you to know that you will be apart of this movie more so then just watching it!! Enjoy!!

Don't be thrown off by the purple title. The movie's a very honest treatment of material that in other hands could easily become maudlin or preachy. It's well acted, suffused with a sense of place and deep religious feeling.

Set on Texas farmland during the Great Depression, Places in the Heart is a film about facing down problems, overcoming obstacles, making the most of what you've got, perseverance, and taking risks. Although the film starts off with a bang, it is quite unassuming for the most part. The pacing is nice and leisurely, and the sound has a real quiet about it, but every so often something happens to shake you out of your comfort zone. Its really well made, really well cast, and extremely well acted. Sally Field pulls off her part with great aplomb, which the Academy deemed to be an Oscar-winning effort, the two actors playing her young children - Yankton Hatten and Gennie James - are quite nifty in the scene-stealing department, whilst the majority of the supporting cast are equally good. The one thing that detracts from the film as a whole is the love affair sub-plot. It seems out-of-whack with the rest of the film, and the actors involved appear to be on auto-pilot throughout. Thankfully, this is only a sideshow, and doesn't take up too much screen time. If you like yourself a good drama piece, Places in the Heart is well worth Amazon's current price of £1.74.
