A Superbly written book
Bipin – The Man Behind the Uniform From Rachana Bisht Rawat, the author of The Brave and Kargil comes yet another profound book on the life of India’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He died in a tragic Mi-17 helicopter crash while on his way to Defence Services Staff College Wellington from Sulur Airforce Station along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and 16 brave officers. The book gives us glimpses and many heart-warming stories of General Rawat’s persona and his outlook from the early days as a Gentleman Cadet to being appointed as the country’s highest ranking military officer. Being affectionately called Bunny by everyone at home, he was born on 16th March 1958 in Dehradun to Lt. General (Retd) Laxman Singh and Mrs. Sushila Rawat. He was a role model for his siblings Colonel (Retd) Vijay Rawat and Kiran. He was once relegated in NDA for failing to do the mandatory pool jump but because of his utmost professional qualities, superseded some of the senior officers to become Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and then CDS. Earlier as Corps Commander he had survived a chopper crash in Dimapur, Nagaland from which he came out unfazed, assuring the pilots not to worry as these things happen. Once he was stopped by a young soldier on guard duty and asked to show his ID card, he simply obliged and later commended him for doing his duty very well. During his elder daughter Kritika’s wedding even as COAS he never used army’s resources instead arranged and paid for everything out of his own pocket. He loved his dogs and often shared his bed with them. He was happiest among his troops and could do the Nepali dance Jhamre effortlessly. He could look deep into a person’s eye and gave a firm handshake. General Rawat had risen like a meteor through the ranks, yet he was a simple man grounded to the roots and very down to earth. He never shied away from taking tough stance once he decided on something, having to the courage to face the accompanied criticism but at the same time cared deeply about the welfare and morale of his troops. He always thought long term with goal to achieve greater good for the country. AS CDS, he had initiated many measures aimed at modernizing and refining the armed forces such as creating a theatre command drawing commanders from all three services so as to streamline coordination and have synchronized operations in future war. He also contributed to the concept of Integrated Battle Group to shorten the decision-making loop in army by reducing the in between links. Indeed, the country has lost a fine soldier who will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. This book is a tribute to General Bipin Rawat and to the men he led from the front.
