Ford AOD Transmissions: Rebuilding and Modifying the AOD, AODE and 4R70W (SA Design Workbench How-To)

Essential for first time builders
So I’ve finally finished my AOD/4r70w rebuild. It was my first time rebuilding a transmission of any kind too. I bought this book before hand and read it cover to cover a lot before buying any parts or beginning the work. At first read I thought the book had ample information and the picture quality was top notch! My goal was to rebuild an AOD trans with the upgraded 4r70w parts. This book documents how to do those upgrades but not very well.Once I actually began disassembly of the two transmissions I instantly realized that this book was missing a lot detail. Every step necessary was documented however specifics were lacking. An example would be: book states to remove c-clip. Problem: book fails to mention the c-clip is holding a hidden spring in place, spring shoots out. The book also sadly doesn’t contain a master parts illustrated break down diagram. The photos it does have are very high quality real photos of a real transmission but a master diagram would have been a nice addition.Overall I still recommend this book! You’ll still need to figure a few things out on your own, and you’ll definitely still use your smart phone to fill in some of the gaps the book has especially if your trying to modify/improve the trans and not just rebuild it to stock spec. Many of the upgrades the book recommends have since been superseded by even newer updates, you’ll have to use other sources to get the latest info on that. That said there is no way the first timer can do this rebuild without this book, there simply is not enough info on this subject matter on the Internet.

This manual has incorrect and outdated information.
I don't recommend this manual, as far as AOD's are concerned. Reason being that on various pages, there's incorrect information. For example, page 47, step 4, it shows filling the pump cavity with trans fluid. Problem is it all leaks out and makes a mess. It's better to stuff the pump gears with assembly lube or Vaseline. Next, on page 57, step 5 on assembly of the reverse clutch. It shows incorrect plate assembly...it's BACKWARDS! The thick pressure plate that is supposed to go in first next to the piston is shown as going is LAST! Also, as far as outdated information goes are the reverse clutch/OD band upgrade from an AODE. Problem is that the AODE transmission was in production for only as short time (about 2 years 1993-1995 I think) and is more rare than the AOD. My transmission parts guy laughed when I brought that one up to him and he told me he hasn't seen an AODE in years! Next is on page 69, step 1 in regards to air check of the servos and clutch packs. It goes into NO detail whatsoever on WHICH ones this method activates through the output shaft before installing the governor or even which passage to introduce the air into. Refer to the Haynes Ford AT manual which clearly shows which passages to introduce air prior to installing the valve body. Next, the manual goes into unnecessary detail in regards to the Trans-Scat shift kit. It me, this shift kit is for the racers and wouldn't recommend for everyday driving. Also, adding at least an "A" servo to an AOD is a no-brainer. Oh, and as for the end play check before bolting the pump on...no mention of this procedure. However, the Haynes manual describes it.In conclusion, I would not recommend this book. I've built transmissions for the past 15 years and have always used the Haynes Ford Automatic transmission manual instead which covers the Ford C3, C4, C6 and AOD. The diagrams are more accurate and the information is more concise. If you want a AOD based manual with pretty pictures to impress your friends, this book is for you. For me, I opt for a book that has accurate information. Get the Haynes Ford manual instead (#10355).

I really like this book
I really like this book. I found this when I was looking for resources to rebuild my own transmission but it wasn't yet available. I purchased the tech manual for the AOD/AODE transmission and have done a lot of research while waiting for this to become available. Having done probably over 50 cumulative hours of research I'd say this is the closest thing to an AOD/AODE bible available.Currently I am in the middle of my rebuild but have performed removal/reinstall twice. (bought a used tranny for $125 so I could take my time on the rebuild). My experience so far is that it leaves little for me to figure out and the pictures are awesome. Most resources discuss the clutch packs and assemblies but leave the novice/home mechanic hoping they understand. With the pictures I can see exactly which assemblies come out together and how the clutch packs go together with much greater confidence.I don't regret buying the tech manuals and still review them as supporting documents but if I had it all to do over again I'd have saved $90 and bought this book only. (The shop/tech manuals run about $40 plus tax and shipping and you need to buy 2 of them to cover the design changes)In summary this is the only book you need to rebuild this very common tranny. It is well written and the detailed photos are a god send. Compared to the price I paid for the "official" shop manuals I would have gladly paid a lot more for this resource.

Not enough detail, too much publicising of after market ...
Not enough detail, too much publicising of after market names! Tells you what should be set up or adjusted but doesn't show you how to do it. All George Reid SA books are the same.
