When the Wind Blows (DVD + Blu-ray)

Still a great film.
I cannot believe this film is almost 40 years old.It still has the same impact as when I first watched it back in the early 90's. At times it's incredibly funny when you see the relationship between Jim and Hilda Bloggs. Clearly in love with each other and have been through a lot as well. You can feel the tension ramping up as you hear the Radio 4 announcements in the background. Right up until the newscaster interrupts the broadcast to let the nation know it's impending doom. This section is dealt with in a really good way. Not overly graphic but you get the idea about what is about to happen and indeed does happen.Seeing the Bloggs then come to terms with reality afterwards is just such a heart wrenching piece. Especially the ending which I defy you to not have tears in your eyes afterwards. I know I shed a fair few that's for sure.Raymond Briggs was a master at his craft, and his book being transferred to film was a master stroke. Of course I cannot go without mentioning the haunting song When the wind blows sung by the late David Bowie at the start of the film.A great film, well worth the purchase.

Written by the wonderful Raymond Briggs who died this week
We decided to watch this given the recentdeath of Raymond Briggs. We have seen The Snowman and Father Christmas but never watched ‘When the Wind Blows’Briefly it looks at a middle aged couple who prepare for a nuclear attack. They follow government guidance but it doesn’t prevent them suffering radiation sickness and dying. It is definitely not for children but the drawings of Raymond Briggs highlights the naive view the general public take with regards a nuclear threat.Guess it was more pertinent in the 1980s and the Cold War. I give it 5 stars - an amazing piece of writing and illustration . We will all miss Raymond Briggs

Lovely film
I remember watching this movie when it was first released. It gave a gritty description of how a nuclear war would be. It scared me to death as I was a young teenager at the time and nuclear war was actually a threat. A proper blast from the past. I would highly recommend.

It's quite dark. Not for kids!
The world crashes into a sheltered bubble of domestic bliss. Existential view of how even mundane and precious things are vulnerable to wider conflict in the world. The world is a practical joke of the general at the expense of the particular. Boom🌍🙄

Crumbs
Watched this after Raymond Briggs sadly died. A really interesting bit of social history, especially for those who weren’t around during the Cold War.
