Cheap alternative that works in most situations, but not Canon 5D MK IV.
Product arrived new in box and with no signs of prior use or sketchy packaging, so good start. If you need a consumer level camera or camcorder with HDMI out to plug straight in to your computer via USB and just work, this unit is most probably going to work. If you have a Canon 5D MK IV, it won't work but I don't know why. The camera outputs HDMI at 1080p and 59.94fps, but there may be a specification in the HDMI data that isn't recognized by this device. The good news is you don't need any hardware for that camera to do the job, you can use free software on a Mac via native USB right out of the camera. I just wish there was a list of supported devices for this unit, or even unsupported devices to clarify its utility.I did have an old "backup test" HD camcorder, a Canon VIXIA HF R10, and that actually works perfectly with this capture dongle, PnP like they say. Same cables, HDMI out of the Canon 5D MK IV, never worked no matter what software and settings I tried. I never did find out why the HDMI signal from the Canon 5D did not work with this device, and even went back and forth with support via email for the three days after receiving this unit, but it didn't matter in the end. All this contemplation and testing led me to search for a software only solution, and sure enough there is a way to download two existing applications to use the Canon 5D MK IV with no external hardware and have it come up as a webcam flawlessly in OBS, Skype, QTPlayer, and others.Since I was able to have two cameras now plugged into a laptop, one with this capture dongle and one with only software, I decided this is a great, reliable, and cheap solution to the problem, without having to buy two of these units or one of them plus a more expensive similar unit. It didn't work as I originally had hoped or intended, but worked out for me anyway.

Take my review with a grain of salt...but hope it helps
I'm a novice in this area but know my way around a PC. I'm using this to backup some old VHS tapes. I tried a cheap input to pc and its software a couple years ago. It was garbage...like sold stating it would work on Windows 7...but was probably too old already and had haphazard driver updates. Fast forward a couple years and this was my 2nd stab at it. It was easy to set up. As in, the capture card was actually plug and play on windows 10. Here's where I've been getting frustrated. I wasn't paying attention. There is no software. I knew exactly what that meant for someone like me who had never heard of OSB and only knows about half the settings. Learning curve... I think I've got the recording I want on OSB but the audio is echoing. I cant tell you how many times I debated scrapping OSB and trying another freeware program. Don't any shareware programmers have an idea of how to make a program that's intuitive? Anyway, I cant ding this product for having bad software...because it has none. I'm thinking that I paid extra for a fairly cheap device but in a more rigid case. Works fine.

DSLR Camera for work-from-home video conferencing
Turned a Sony A6400 DSLR into a video camera for video conference calls while working from home as part of shelter in place because of COVID. This unit was $200, and 33% cheaper than Magewell's product, which from images the product looks identical; I suspect Magewell is only rebranding this non-branded component and charging a premium. Same product is available direct from China via other resellers for $60, however delivery time is much longer.Plugged in, to the camera's HDMI out port (needs a different HDMI cable than supplied in the box), USB into a Windows 10 Laptop, and it just worked. Some reviews report the HDMI input to USB output UVC device gets hot, but from my 1st day of usage it's only warm to the touch. That is expected as the electronics dissipate heat via the metal casing.Great solution to re-use high quality lenses on a DSLR for video conferences through a laptop or computer.

Instructions are terrible but it works.
Bought this to transfer recordings from a DVR onto a thumb drive. The literature and instructions make it sound like it is idiot proof “plug and play“... well not exactly. It didn’t work with the software I had for my camcorder or window media player. However, after reading a few reviews, I found out there are a number of free video capture programs that are compatible. Tried a couple. Liked OBS “open broadcast software” The best. Good picture, the sound is a little off but good enough for my purposes. Note, make sure to disable your camera. Overall pleased. Decent product for the price just needs way better instructions.

Worked the first time awesome resolution
I have coupled this with a Multi Screen interface and an S-video to HMDI converter for an older cameras I have. This application is for a broadcast program feature on the internet. The camera interface plugs into the multi-screen splitter then into this device to get it to the 3.0 USB on my Laptop. I am using a Qosmio X505 890 gaming laptop. They cast to the internet with Discord webcasting software. The Laptops I am multi-screening are the same. The resolution for all the interfacing equipment is outstanding. So far so good. I have a program airing in a month so time will tell if this device holds up. The reviews I have recived about the quality of the broadcast are all "extraordinary". Great product. Better than I expected.

Converts HDMI to a virtual camera - but doesn't record
This device does what it does very well. I'm connecting an external video source with an HDMI connection to my PC, and the video appears as a virtual camera + an audio source. So I can watch and hear the video. What the product description doesn't make clear is that it doesn't come with any recording software, this has to be purchased separately. The manual recommends a couple and I already had a different screen capture program that works perfectly with it, but the fact you can't record 'out-the-box' may come as a nasty surprise - hence I dropped a star from the review.
