Dark Days: James Baldwin (Penguin Modern)

Was a nice read, not too heavy and can be done within a day or two depending on your needs. Nice to have some an insight into how he saw the world and his personal growth at times. Definitely described parts of me.

This book is a great little book by James Baldwin on race in America. His blunt, direct and unapologetic. His not trying to placate anybody when he talks about controversial issues. It is a short but great introduction to the writer and poet James Baldwin.

‘Dark Days’ is a little book made up of three different essays. These were all written around 1980 but they are strikingly similar to the events we are experiencing today. These essays are just another example of how systemic racism is still a huge problem, even though a lot of people like to bring up ‘how far we’ve come since then’. In reality, we’ve really only taken two steps forward and one step back. If that. This was my first time reading Baldwin’s work and I loved it. He has a writing style and voice which just hits you to your core and it’s really powerful.

I really recommend picking this one up and getting the books in this series in general. This was a great way to read something from an author new to me and it has since made me want to buy more of their work!

Another great read by Baldwin, love the small pocket sizes of these books that makes them so easy to carry and open whenever!

Baldwin wrote this set of essays back in 1985. 37 years later, each phrase and sentence resonates the same way as it did then. What stands out is the author's sharp sense of perception and, defined perspectives. A rational reader of this decade can only hope this book could become a fiction. Baldwin himself would've wanted that too. If more people get to understand the perspective that Baldwin presents, maybe some day, half a decade later we can hope for it to, finally, become a work of fiction.

Sono estremamente felice di aver trovato questi saggi in questa carinissima collezione. Ne ho comprati diversi. Formato elegante e anche font comodo per la lettura. Grazie ad amazon riesco a trovare libri difficilmente reperibili in Italia e in lingua originale a prezzi davvero convenienti. Saggi che tutti dovrebbero leggere dalla penna acuta di James Baldwin.

Un grand auteur qui nous permet de découvrir la situation du Noir américain. Lire ce livre attisera notre curiosité à lire les autres écrits de ce grand écrivain. A.P.
