Introduction to Logic: Second Edition (Synthesis Lectures on Computer Science) Paperback – 1 Aug. 2013

I ordered this book as part of an online course that I was taking and I have to admit, I was disappointed in the quality of the book. The text had many typos. It also explains the subject matter poorly. I believe this text was produced from VRS or from poorly typed lecture notes. This was obviously not made to be a traditional teaching text on the subject and provides a sub par introduction to the subject.

I ordered this book when I discovered that the material I was downloading with the Coursera course on Logic taught by the author was incomplete. This was either due to problems with the on-line course, or my computer ineptitude. In any event, it certainly filled in the blanks of the information I was missing. Unfortunately, by then I was behind in the coursework, and had to withdraw, planning to sign up again the next time it is offered.II doubt that one could learn the material from this book alone; it is more of a class outline. There is no answer key in the book for the questions at the end of the chapters, and I have not found any on-line reference to this missing information. Using the book with the on-line course works quite well as your receive the answers to the exercises and problem testing nearly instantaneously.I tried to supplement my knowledge of logic by attempting to read Everything that Linguists Have Always Wanted to Know About Logic* but were ashamed to ask by James D McCawley. This book had the opposite problem compared to the brevity of the Genesereth/Kao text--It consists of 600 plus pages to cover the material that this book covers in 160 pages.If a person was not working to support himself and had no obligations to be civil and sociable to other family members and friends, you could probably work through the Introduction to Logic with one or two other logic textbooks, and within four or five years have a decent understanding of the subject.The other method of learning the material is to sign up for the on-line course (it's free). The course is completed eight weeks. It would probably be a good idea to order this book before the class starts as it took two or three weeks to arrive. I'll report back when and if I'm successful in this endeavor.
