I'm looking for a true powder to fill small cracks. Do you have a mesh size for this? The photo looks like small particles.

The equipment we use for manufacturing produces up to 300 mesh micro-particles, however, in order to prevent over-heat and change of physical attributes of natural turquoise, we have a series of designed mechanism to maintain the quality yield of the powder, so it’s safe to say the powder is anywhere from 200 to 300 mesh size. It’s super-fine powder, human eyes can’t observe the single particle of it, which can be easily fit into any tiny cracks with no problem.

The reason why the photo is showing visible particles is as below:

Turquoise has this unique character that it has a relatively unstable structure, and when it’s in powder state, the particles tend to adhere to each other and form a visible cluster, the clusters can be easily crushed into super-fine state of powder. Please refer to the second product image, when the powder is bagged, you can see that clusters are eliminated due to the light pressure of the bag walls.

Question 2

Will this product melt at a certain temperature? Can it be used in ceramic applications and fired in a kiln?

Accepted Answer

Instead of being melted, the powder will be burned and damaged at high temperature. It's powder form of turquoise gemstone, so it has exactly same physical character. Turquoise can never be exposed to extreme temperature. Most common application for powder is to mix it with epoxy and apply "Inlay" process to wood and other materials. For ceramic applications, it's better that you apply the powder after the kiln process. Use methods (like carve) to form channels on ceramic surface based on your design, and then apply the inlay, it should work out very well.

Question 3

In candle jar making, can you top the wax with this product or will it melt or ignite?

This is actual, ground up turquoise so it should never ignite it.  If you're going to put it on the top of of a wax candle there shouldn't be any problem at all but it seems like it might be a bit of an expensive way to get that color.   I use it to make inlay on wood.  You mix it with super glue and put it into cracks and then polish it even with the surface and it looks amazing.  It  might be too much for a candle though.

What are the proportions for a proper mix of epoxy and powder for use in filling an inlay in a clay pottery piece?
