Catlow
Another five star book. As usual I didn't want to finish reading and also was looking forward to L'Amour's next one. The final different endings were great. I'm always looking for his books and getting more on my reader.

Go for Catlow
I'm not a regular reader of Westerns. I picked up "Catlow" because it's the basis for a horse opera of the same title, staring the interesting cinema bouillabaisse of Yul Brynner, Richard Crenna and Leonard Nemoy.I do continue to admire Louis L'Amour, and his amazing ability to churn out literally hundreds of fresh stories without giving the reader feelings of deja vu. In this story, we've got lifelong friends who have been parted by the law, but not by personal inclination. Ben Cowan may be a lawman, may have to figure just what Bijah Catlow is planning to do as his last big strike, and may have to bring him to justice; but that is just as much about saving his best pal from a hanging as it is about bringing Catlow back from Mexico to face the judge. Catlow does have a big plan in mind - for it to work, he'll not only have to escape from the Mexican army, a very angry senorita, his own unreliable men, Apaches, and a hit man hired by a rancher after Catlow for rustling - he'll need everything he's got, including, just maybe, help from his old pal Cowan. It's pretty exciting stuff, with some interesting encounters (that might lead to both men settling down) added in for good measure. The plot keeps moving, we have plenty of action, and the efforts of Cowan and Catlow are practical and authentic.(The movie was made in 1971, and stars Yul Brynner as Catlow, Richard Crenna as Cowan, and Leonard Nimoy as Miller, the hit man. I only saw pieces of it before, but after reading the book, I'm really intrigued.)

Laconic and evocative
As a young boy, I read every Louis L'Amout book I could get my hands on, often reading them over and over again but then I grew up and forgot about them. Now some 60 years later, I have rediscovered them and am getting even more pleasure from reading them. In doing so, I find myself wanting to saddle up a horse and follow the trails so brilliantly described, with a camera (not a Winchester rifle) in my hands. Of course, it's an idealistic dream; I've only ridden a horse once in my entire life, and the places that L'Amour wrote about, and which still exist unchanged, are probably so harsh that I wouldn't survive a week but, nevertheless, I have a hankering to do so. Writing doesn't come much more evocative than this. L'Amour was above all else a storyteller and a great one at that. Do yourself and your imagination a huge favor and start reading; you won't regret a single moment of the time you spend.

Great read
I love this book from beginning to end.😀 The friend ship and the respect the characters have for each other is wonderful. A must read.

Louis L'Amour is second to NONE! The MASTER story teller par excellence.
Catlow is a great read. Gun smoke, sweat, dust, sun, danger, adventure, adversity, perseverance, and men with a code who ride for the brand. I recommend all of Senor L'Amour's novels. It's been 32 years since the world lost this amazing man (1988). God bless 🙏 his wife, son and daughter. I gave five stars because there was no higher rating available.

Pffft...
Worst L'Amour ever. Poor plot, no character development to speak of and I have nothing more to say about this.

The Respect Two Men Develop for Each Other Over A Lifetime
Two men who grew up together, often fought each other to a draw and ended up on opposite sides of the law save each other's lives as a habit but never giving in to each other. The story exemplifies what the mutual respect between two men can have on each other and the people around them.Martin Johnson

Written by the best
Louis L'Amour authored the best western ever published. His ability to accurately describe the western terrain, develop his characters and interact them in a fabulous story is extraordinary.

2 Friends From Each Side Of The Law
Well done story. 2 friends separated by the law. A well conceived and executed heist, a pursuit across the desert with poisoned arrows for spice. Like all L'amour's stories beautiful women for the heroes. Good characters and harsh terrain to separate the men from the tender foots.
